Original Press Release:

Caterpillar Updates 924G and 924Gz Wheel Loaders to Reduce Emissions and Improve Operator Comfort

Caterpillar has updated the 924G and the 924Gz wheel loaders. Both updated models include electronically controlled engines that boost horsepower by 7 percent, increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions; a redesigned operator's station; and several features that make the 924G and 924Gz more compatible with the environment. The new models retain many of its predecessor's features, such as high-efficiency hydraulics and the innovative VersaLink(TM) Loader Linkage that allows the 924G to function as a dedicated wheel loader or an integrated toolcarrier. With their size, power, performance and interchangeability of work tools, the new machines work productively and cost effectively in many applications, including material handling, waste handling, recycling, truck loading, site preparation, agriculture and landscaping.

Advanced Power Train Technology
The new 924G and 924Gz are powered by an electronically controlled Cat® 3056E Direct Injection Turbocharged (DIT) engine with Air-to-Air After Cooling (ATAAC). The engine is rated at 121 net horsepower (90.1 kilowatts). It has one of the lowest fuel consumption rates in its size class and meets the EPA Tier 2 emissions requirements. The engine's 48 percent torque rise allows increased power during heavy-duty use. Low cylinder pressure rise and low peak pressure enhance reliability and durability. The cooling system and engine are located in separate compartments to minimize sound levels and improve service access. Cooling is provided by an "on-demand" hydraulically driven fan that helps reduce sound and boost fuel economy. Improved sealing of the engine doors and fine mesh air-intake screens minimize debris in the cooling cores, extending intervals between cleanings. An automatic reversing fan option with manual override is available for high airborne debris environments.

The engine delivers power through a field-proven Cat transmission with full on-the-go directional and speed change capabilities. The transmission features a new Electronic Clutch Pressure Control for smoother shifts and reduced wear on components. Maximum travel speed is 23.9 miles per hour (38.5 kilometers per hour). Variable Shift Control has added a part throttle setting to the standard autoshift function for improved fuel economy and better load control. An optional low-speed transmission is available for applications requiring high hydraulic flow at low ground speed.

Improved Operator's Station
The cab on both the updated 924G and 924Gz includes a new instrument panel with easy-to-read white-faced gauges and expanded warning, indicator and diagnostic functions. New standard features include a speedometer, odometer, tachometer, gear and gear direction indicator.

A single, low-effort joystick for lift and tilt functions reduces operator fatigue, and the standard integrated directional control switch on the joystick enhances productivity. When working in constant engine speed applications, the operator can set desired rpm at the touch of a button.

The cab is quiet, roomy and well ventilated to increase operator comfort and productivity. There is excellent visibility to critical areas. The standard seat provides excellent support and is fully adjustable to accommodate operator preferences. The cab features plenty of storage space and can be customized with a 12-volt converter, sun visor and rear-window sunscreen, external mirrors and auxiliary lighting packages.

Two new options for the 924G and 924Gz include the Caterpillar® Machine Security System for theft deterrence and Product Link, a system for monitoring machine functions and location remotely.

Environmentally Responsible Design
Several features make the new 924G and 924Gz environmentally friendly machines. The electronic engine improves fuel efficiency, while reducing emissions and noise. The machines can use Cat biodegradable hydraulic oil. Their genuine Cat hydraulic components help prevent fluid leaks. The engine oil, transmission and hydraulic filters are positioned vertically for easier removal without spills. Extended fluid change intervals also reduce the risk of spills, while reducing waste oil and operating costs. All major components are designed to be rebuilt, conserving natural resources and reducing life cycle costs.

Proven Design Features
The updated 924G and 924Gz retain the best features of its predecessor models. A high-performance hydraulic system, matched to the power train, delivers high bucket fill factors and fast cycle times for excellent productivity.

On the 924G, the VersaLink Loader Linkage has also been retained. This unique linkage allows exceptional performance, unparalleled versatility and outstanding visibility. The standard 924G can be equipped with a quick coupler for fast, easy tool changes. A High Lift VersaLink arrangement is available for applications requiring extra reach and lift height. The 924G can also be used as a dedicated wheel loader with direct pin-on tools. The machine can be reconfigured from pin-on to quick coupler or from standard to High Lift quickly with a minimum of new parts. It is also easy and economical to add hydraulic functions to the 924G, thanks to the modular valve system.

The new models continue to be easy to maintain and service. Engine enclosure doors lift almost effortlessly. All daily maintenance can be accomplished from ground level. Key service points are grouped for convenience and easy access from the ground. Sight gauges allow quick visual inspections and reduce the opportunity for contamination. S*O*Ssm (Scheduled Oil Sampling) valves permit faster, cleaner sampling. A swing-out cooling fan cuts cleaning time and provides full access to both sides of the cooling cores. Other serviceability features include extended fluid change intervals, adjustment-free brakes, a maintenance-free drive shaft and self-diagnostic capabilities.
