New Cat® 938G Series II Wheel Loader Delivers High Performance, Improved Fuel Economy and Reduced Emissions

Caterpillar introduces the 938G Series II wheel loader with new features that include a low-emissions engine, an improved transmission, an updated cooling system, environmental enhancements and a redesigned operator's station.

The G-Series II machine delivers 160 net horsepower (119 kilowatts). Its operating weight is 29,657 pounds (13 452 kilograms), and it can be equipped with buckets ranging in size from 3.0 to 4.0 cubic yards (2.3 to 3.0 cubic meters).

Advanced power train technology
The new wheel loader is powered by a Cat 3126B diesel engine that meets worldwide emissions regulations through 2006. The engine is turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled and features an electronically controlled fuel system that improves responsiveness, increases fuel efficiency, reduces emissions and speeds diagnostics. The control module also allows the 938G II to be operated at altitudes as high as 10,000 feet (3050 meters) without deration.

The electronic engine is integrated with an on-demand cooling fan. The engine compensates for varying fan loads and provides constant net horsepower, regardless of operating conditions.

The electronic powershift transmission is also fully integrated with the engine. The transmission's automatic shifting capability allows on-the-go speed and directional changes. Electronic Clutch Pressure Control modulates the clutches individually for smoother shifting and longer clutch life. The new Integrated Braking System will downshift and eventually neutralize the transmission when the left brake pedal is applied, enhancing performance and brake life. Another new feature, Variable Shift Control, lets the operator select one of three shift patterns, based on the application and operating preferences. This reduces fuel consumption in many applications, yet full machine power is always available, regardless of the shift pattern selected.

High-performance cooling system
A new cooling package on the 938G II reduces radiator plugging and improves fuel efficiency. The system incorporates a reverse-flow design, pulling air through the rear grill and sending it out the top and sides of the machine. Rear airflow picks up less debris from the ground, reducing the risk of plugging. To further minimize plugging, the radiator core features square-wave-shaped fins and a low fin density. The cooling system has a swing-out grill, hydraulic oil cooler and air conditioner condenser, plus easy-access cores, to cut maintenance time.

Environmental enhancements
The 938G II has an environmentally-friendly design. The engine is clean and quiet, and the on-demand fan reduces fuel consumption and sound levels. Many components are designed to be rebuilt or remanufactured, rather than thrown away. Oil sampling valves, spin-on filter elements and ecology drains prevent leaks and minimize spills. Extended Life Coolant/Antifreeze allows longer service intervals, reducing fluid consumption and minimizing disposal issues. Air conditioning refrigerant does not contain CFCs.

Comfortable work environment
The cab on the 938G II has low-effort steering, new pilot-assisted implement controls and a new centrally located, easy-to-read instrument cluster. An adjustable seat, tilt steering column, new floor-mounted pedals and optional Ride Control System further enhance comfort and efficiency. Visibility is excellent to the front and rear of the machine. Left and right side doors swing open 180° and latch for optimum ventilation, visibility and communication to the ground. The cab features generous storage space and can be equipped with an optional factory-installed AM/FM/Weather Band radio.

Versatile and serviceable
The 938G II works productively with a variety of Cat buckets and Ground Engaging Tool options to match virtually any application. An optional factory-installed quick coupler and a large selection of Cat work tools make the machines even more versatile.

The new wheel loader is also highly serviceable. All service points, including color-coded SoOoSSM oil analysis sampling ports, are accessible from the ground. Remote grease lines culminate in two convenient central lube points. The engine is readily accessible through service doors and side panels that can be opened quickly. Engine oil change intervals are extended to 500 hours with the use of CH-4 oil. The factory-installed coolant (Cat Extended Life Coolant/Antifreeze) provides protection for up to 6,000 hours. An internal indicator tracks brake wear. Two maintenance-free batteries are located in a built-in box in the left rear frame, with a sealed lid to keep moisture out. The Caterpillar® Monitoring System stores critical information to aid in diagnostics and repair.

An optional wireless communication system called Product Link is available as a factory- or dealer-installed attachment for the 938G II. Product Link uses satellite technology and the Internet to provide machine location, service meter hour and product health information. The system is a valuable fleet management tool that helps improve availability and increase uptime. An optional electronic security system is also available.
