Westfalia Technologies Installing Automated Warehouse System for Sigma Alimentos, Mexico's Refrigerated Food Giant
YORK, Pa. - April 23, 2007 - Westfalia Technologies Inc. is currently installing an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) for Sigma Alimentos, Mexico's top producer of refrigerated and frozen foods, at a new distribution center in Monterrey, Mexico.
A division of Grupo Alfa, Sigma operates one of Mexico's largest refrigerated distribution networks and leads the Mexican market in processed meat and cheese products, with brands that include Chalet and El Cazo Mexicano. Its products are sold throughout Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and the U.S. The company also holds exclusive rights to produce yogurt under the Yoplait brand in Mexico and Central America and to distribute Oscar Mayer products in Mexico.
The new refrigerated distribution center is Sigma's first automated warehouse, and utilizes Westfalia's AS/RS and Savanna.NET® Warehouse Management System (WMS). The Westfalia system includes two Storage/Retrieval Machines (SRMs), 200 linear feet of conveyors and a 30ft.-high rack structure with four levels, the first level designated for picking.
According to Gary Frank, Vice President of Automation for Westfalia, Sigma's needs are met with a system that includes a combination of standard and custom design elements. Unique system features include a four-pallet transfer car; the option for manual infeed with depalletizing for case-picking lanes; and an option to have two Satellite® rack entry vehicles on each SRM.
"Westfalia's Savanna.NET® WMS will manage all products as they travel through the distribution center, including order picking." Says Frank. "With its modular structure, Savanna.NET is capable of adapting and integrating individual logistics requirements, such as the case picking, SKU organization and order consolidation Sigma requires."
Sigma's new distribution center will be fully operational in the summer of 2007.
