MGE Introduces First Web-Ready UPS for Enterprise Applications up to 800kVA

EPS8000 UPS Features Maximum Power Density, Minimum Footprint and Latest Generation of Customer Connectivity Using Web Server-on-a-Chip Technology

COSTA MESA, Calif. - April 5, 2004 - Bringing new functionality to data center power protection, the first enterprise class uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with built-in web server capabilities is now available exclusively from MGE UPS SYSTEMS INC.,the technology leader in providing unsurpassed power protection solutions to computer data centers, telecommunications and industrial operations. In addition to leading-edge connectivity options, MGE's new EPS8000 UPS assures true Digital Power Quality (DPQ) for enterprise applications in models from 555kVA to 800kVA with best-in-class efficiency, power density and generator compatibility for long-duration backup requirements. For maximum reliability, the system incorporates triple redundant power sources (line, load and battery) as well as fault tolerant circuitry to ensure that fan failure will not compromise UPS operation.

"The EPS8000 UPS represents a new generation of power protection for the enterprise user because it integrates the most precise power quality with sophisticated connectivity options that make it one of the first true Internet appliances," according to MGE product manager Alan Katz.

"The Digital Power Quality produces highly regulated voltage and is especially fault tolerant while the built-in web-server, SNMP or Modbus options enable seamless monitoring in virtually any environment. In fact, with no additional computer connection, the embedded web-server chip enables detailed UPS monitoring from anywhere in the world. This configuration also allows users to take advantage of MGE's new PowerSentinel monitoring program that enables our worldwide service department to monitor the UPS installation 7x24 and immediately dispatch field engineers if necessary. In many cases, we can preemptively address issues before the user even realizes that there is a problem," Katz added.

Fitting into locations as small as 121-inches wide, the space-conscious design of the EPS8000 offers one of the highest power densities available in this class of UPS at 23kW per square foot, while the integrated isolation transformer and input filter eliminate the need for bulky auxiliary cabinets. Users can access all EPS8000 components from the front of the cabinet with no rear access required, reducing footprint requirements even further by allowing installation in any unused corner.

The speed, precision, and dynamic response of the EPS8000 system's DPQ logic allow the inverter to have several unique performance characteristics including:

Outstanding dynamic load response: Combined with MGE's data-grade input filter, the DPQ logic and new 12-pulse rectifier create an output waveform from hundreds of precisely controlled pulses. The DPQ logic continuously compares the output power to a reference sine wave and applies sub-cycle correction pulses to maintain precise voltage regulation within 5 percent even when exposed to a 100 percent step load typical of equipment startup.

Active harmonic conditioning: With very low total harmonic distortion (THD), low kVAR, and no leading power factor the EPS 8000 is ideal for operation with engine generators, minimizing the need for oversizing required by some comparable UPS systems.

Fault tolerance: Circuitry allows the UPS to sustain dead shorts with no risk of damage to the inverter, a vital feature in today's data center environments where frequent wiring changes on the critical bus can fault the output and cause severe damage to most other UPSs. This is also essential for sensitive broadcast applications that are subject to the "crowbar" effect.

High energy efficiency: DPQ logic optimizes the output waveform to match the load profile and minimize wasteful switching losses. This assures extremely high energy efficiency even when the UPS is lightly loaded. Even with the standard input isolation transformer (most published efficiencies do not include the input isolation transformer), efficiency is among the highest in the industry. The energy cost savings often exceed the cost of the UPS module in as little as three to five years compared to leading brands.

The standard communication interface features an informative front panel text display, 11 dry contacts for alarm and 9 for control functions, a DB9 port for field service interface, a ModBus port (RS232 or RS485) and a slot for additional communications cards. Communications options for the EPS8000 UPS include the LantronixB. web server-on-a-chip with emWareB. software interface, an Advanced Graphical User Interface, cards for SNMP, XML enhanced web monitoring and NMS integration for HP OpenViewB., IBMB. TivoliB., NetViewB., CA UnicenterB. and others. Additional options comprise Battery Disconnect, remote or attached Maintenance Bypass and a cabinet with side and rear access. Proactive 7x24 monitoring with the PowerSentinel program will be available for customers with an MGE factory service contract.

Available now with 8-week lead times, the new models meet worldwide standards for safety and performance. List prices start at $144,000 for the 555kVA model. For more information, contact MGE at 800-523-0142 or via their Web site at: http://www.mgeups.com/us.
