EM Microelectronic Introduces Ultra-Low Current Watchdog IC Family Consuming Only 2.4uA, Three to Five Times Less than Competition

EM6323/24 combines reset and watchdog functions and is ideal for battery-operated applications

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sept. 30, 2003 - EM Microelectronic, a company of the Swatch Group, announces an ultra-low voltage, low-current watchdog IC in a variety of configurations for maximum flexibility in industrial, computing and communication applications. The EM6323/24 circuits feature low threshold voltages between 1.31V and 4.63V, and operate with power supplies between 1.5V and 5V over a wide temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.

The EM6323/24 achieves a breakthrough with its combination of 1.31V threshold voltage, ultra-low 2.4uA supply current and space-efficient 5-pin SOT23 packaging. This reset and watchdog circuit can be used to monitor the power supplies in low-power microprocessors, microcontrollers and digital systems. The EM6323/24 acts as a watchdog and ensures that the MCU is working properly at all times by sending appropriate reset pulses. The watchdog function can be disabled by driving the watchdog input pin with a three-state driver or by leaving it unconnected, which is particularly useful when the MCU is in sleep mode.

The EM6323 has all of the features of the EM6324, plus an additional manual reset pin with internal pull-up. Both circuits also send a reset signal to the microprocessor during power-up, power-down and brownout conditions. Whenever the supply voltage declines below the factory-programmed reset threshold, the EM6323/24 circuit asserts a reset signal with a given propagation delay (reset timeout period).

"The EM6323/24 benefits from EM Microelectronic's long history and expertise in ultra low power IC design. It consumes significantly less current than its closest competitors, and especially so over the entire temperature range. The EM6323/24 has a low 2.4uA supply current whereas competitors' closest products usually consume 6 to 12uA. This brings significant board-level power savings for the system engineer and makes the EM6323/24 a very attractive product, "says Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Microelectronic. "EM Microelectronic offers a wide portfolio of supervisory circuits with a variety of features and functions at a competitive price, making it easier for designers to find the optimum device for their application."

The EM6323/24 circuit is available in 11 standard threshold voltage options from 4.63V down to 1.31V, suitable for monitoring main supply voltages of 5V, 3.3V, 3V and 1.5V, with an accuracy of ±1.5%. It has a supply current starting as low as 2.4uA and is available in 5-pin SOT23 packaging, making it ideal for use in battery-operated and portable industrial and communication equipment. Reset outputs are available in active-low push-pull and open-drain configurations and in active-high push-pull. A total of 16 different timeout periods are factory-programmable both for the watchdog and reset functions, ensuring a maximum flexibility for the end user.

The EM6323/24 is ideal for applications such as microprocessor systems; personal computers and workstations; microcontrollers and digital signal processors; MPEG-2 decoders; point-of-sale equipment; routers, hubs and switches; communication equipment; vending machines and ATMs; industrial applications and metering; HVAC; portable medical units; and GPS and battery-powered equipment. High temperature operation makes the EM6323/24 suitable for automotive applications.

The EM6323/24 joins a family of high-performance voltage supervisory ICs introduced a year ago that includes the EM6352/53/54/25. In addition to the reset function offered by the EM6352/53/54/25, the new EM6323/24 also provides watchdog and manual reset functions. For even higher levels of reliability and accuracy, EM Microelectronic offers the V6150 windowed watchdog circuit.

Pricing and Availability

The EM6323/24 pricing starts at $0.60 each in quantities of 1,000. The EM6323/24 circuit is available now from EM Microelectronic and its authorized distributors in SOT23-5 packaging.
