Voltage Regulator offers input capability down to 0.9 V.

Press Release Summary:

Model LT3020 has low dropout voltage of 150 mV while delivering up to 100 mA of output current. Low VIN capability enables it to operate across voltage range of single-cell alkaline and NiMH batteries. Unit offers micropower operation with 120 µA of quiescent current and less than 3 µA in shutdown. Available in 8-lead DFN or MSOP package, regulator includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting with hysteresis, and reverse-current protection.

Original Press Release:

100mA VLDO Operates from Input Voltages as Low as 0.9V

MILPITAS, CA - July 22, 2004 - Linear Technology Corporation announces the LT3020, the industry's first VLDO (very low dropout voltage regulator) with input voltage capability down to 0.9V. The LT3020 has a very low dropout voltage of only 150mV while delivering up to 100mA of output current. The low VIN capability is important, as many emerging handheld applications are using a 1.5V main rail and require output voltages from 1.25V to 0.9V to drive low voltage microprocessor and microcontroller cores. The LT3020's minimum input voltage of 0.9V enables it to operate across the entire voltage range of both single cell alkaline and NiMH (1.4V to 0.9V) batteries. Furthermore, its 150mV dropout voltage optimizes battery run time in single cell applications with a low VIN to VOUT differential. Additionally, the LT3020 offers micropower operation with only 120uA of quiescent current and less than 3uA in shutdown, maximizing run time in battery powered handheld applications.

The LT3020 regulator optimizes stability and transient response with low ESR ceramic output capacitors as small as 2.2uF. Other LT3020 features include 0% line regulation and 0.2% load regulation. Internal protection circuitry includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting with hysteresis, and reverse-current protection. The LT3020 regulator is available in a low profile (0.75mm) 8-lead DFN (3mm x 3mm) package with an exposed pad and an 8-lead MSOP package. Both offer very compact solution footprints required in handheld applications.

Both LT3020EDD 8-lead DFN and the LT3020EMS8 (MSOP-8) are available from stock. 1,000-piece pricing starts at $1.50 each for both package options.
