Original Press Release:

High Efficiency VRMs Meet AMD K8 Processor Power Specifications

o >85% efficiency eases system design
o 1U/2U or horizontal mounting for workstation or server-room applications
o Meets AMD power specifications to satisfy latest 64-bit AMD Opteron(TM) and Athlon(TM) processor families

February 10th, 2006, Mansfield, MA - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has launched a new series of voltage regulator modules (VRMs) that have high efficiency, high current density and fast transient load response meeting the AMD64(TM) processor power specifications.

The 80A VRK81B080CS and VRK81B080CU are 2U and 1U high units respectively. A third regulator module, the 100A VRK81B100TH, is horizontally mounted and measures just 0.415" high to enable extremely low profile implementation. These three options provide designers with a high degree of flexibility to match diverse system requirements from workstation to server-room applications. All three modules achieve greater than 85% efficiency, which eases system design by allowing lower component temperatures and simplifies system thermal management by reducing power dissipation.

The new modules are all fully RoHS compliant, and meet the strict specifications for powering the latest AMD Opteron(TM) processors, which target compute-intensive applications including professional digital media. The regulator specification is tight, to meet the processor's demands when performing computationally intensive tasks such as financial modeling, scientific applications, CAD graphics, or intensive database transactions. VRMs for use with Opteron processors must satisfy fast load transients demanding up to 100A/µs, and must provide a variety of integrated monitoring and protection features such as power good indicator, overcurrent latch-off, short circuit protector, differential remote sense and tri-state output when disabled. The VRK81B080CS and VRK81B080CU also offer support for an I²C temperature monitor, allowing applications that use the System Monitoring Bus (SMBus) to add further load-related controls such as variable fan speed.

Input and output ratings for the VRK81B080CS, VRK81B080CU and VRK81B100TH are 0.8V-1.55V-output voltage, and 12V nominal input voltage. The output voltage is VID programmable allowing the processor to command the exact voltage required.

"Developing VRMs already proven to meet popular processor power specifications helps simplify the task of designing for engineers," said Rob Hill, Vice President of Global Product Development C&D Technologies. "The high efficiency levels and small form factor of the VRK81B080CS, VRK81B080CU and VRK81B100TH also brings other important benefits to customer's product designs."

Pricing in OEM quantities is $28.80 per unit for the VRK81B080CS and VRK81B080CU, and $36.30 per unit for the VRK81B100TH.

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialized focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.
The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Mansfield, Massachusetts, USA, with manufacturing in USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies, magnetics, Data Acquisition devices and panel meters, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three key acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September 2004, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
