Voltage Level Translators translate mixed I/O voltages.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring configurable, dual-supply design, 8-bit Model SN74LVC8T245 and 16-bit Model SN74LVC16T245 allow for bi-directional level translation between 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, and 5.0 V nodes, and are essential when lower level voltage output is trying to communicate with higher voltage input. Each has 2 supply rails that operate over range of 1.65-5.5 V. When either supply voltage is switched off, all outputs are placed in Hi-Z mode, eliminating need for power supply sequencing.

TI Adds Two New Dual Supply Level Translators To Its Translation Portfolio

Fully-configurable Dual-supply Design Allows Each Port to Operate Over the Full 1.65-V to 5.5-V Supply Voltage Range

DALLAS (December 9, 2005) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) has expanded its voltage level translation portfolio with the introduction of new 8-Bit and 16-Bit dual-supply voltage level translators. The SN74LVC8T245 and the SN74LVC16T245 allow for more design flexibility for translating mixed I/O voltages in a system. (See www.ti.com/trans.)

These devices allow for bi- directional level translation between the 1.8-V, 2.5-V, 3.3-V, and 5.0-V nodes and are essential when a lower level voltage output is trying to communicate with a higher voltage input (3.3-V output and 5-V input, for example). By using a dual-supply level translator, not only is input compatibility achieved but total system power is also held in check. The opposite condition, where a higher voltage output is sending signals to a lower voltage input (5-V output and 3.3-V input, for example), using a dual-supply level-translator provides further IO compatibility and eliminates the need for high voltage tolerance at the input; thus assisting the board designer for worry-free communication between ICs.

Both the 8-bit SN74LVC8T245 and the 16-Bit SN74LVC16T245 offer several advantages over competitive offerings. Each of them has two supply rails that operate over the full range of 1.65V to 5.5V. When either supply voltage is switched off, all outputs are placed in the Hi-Z mode. This eliminates the need for power supply sequencing, i.e. any supply voltage can be ramped up first. These translators also have the Ioff feature which allows use in partial power-down applications.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing
The SN74LVC8T245 is available in the space saving QFN package (3.5mm x 5.5mm) making it well suited for use in portable applications and provides excellent thermal, mechanical and reliability performance. The device has also been released in the Industry-standard SSOP, TSSOP, and TVSOP packages. Budgetary pricing for the SN74LVC8T245RHLR (QFN) is set at $0.86 in quantities of 1,000.

The SN74LVC16T245 is planned for release in the space saving VFBGA package (7mm x 4.5mm). The device is currently released in the Industry-standard SSOP, TSSOP, and TVSOP packages. Budgetary pricing for the SN74LVC16T245DGVR (TVSOP) is set at $1.65 in quantities of 1,000.
