Overview
The IBM Virtualization Engine(TM) TS7510 is a new member of the family of IBM Virtualization Engine for storage offerings designed to help enhance Information Lifecycle Management by improving the utilization of tape resources. The TS7510 Virtualization Engine combines hardware and software into an integrated solution enabling tape virtualization for open systems servers connecting over Fibre Channel physical connections. The TS7510 Virtualization Engine provides the processing engine of the TS7510.

The TS7510 utilizes IBM technology and software that emulates IBM tape libraries, drives, and media. This emulation is designed to help customers achieve the following operational and throughput efficiencies:

Backup window reduction
Restore time reduction
Data sharing and resource virtualization facilitation
Operational efficiencies
Low total cost of ownership (TCO)

Improved sharing of tape libraries across applications and servers
The TS7510 consists of three hardware machine types and an IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Software Version 1 Release 1 program (5639-CC7). The IBM System Storage(TM) 3952 Tape Frame Model F05, is an independent frame used to contain the other components of the TS7510. The 3952 Tape Frame can contain:

One or two TS7510 Virtualization Engines
Two IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Model SV5
Up to six IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Model SX5 in the base unit frame
Up to eight IBM Virtualization Engine TS7510 Model SX5 in an expansion frame

Product preview
Future features and capabilities of the TS7510 will include support for the IBM System Storage TS1120 Tape Drive Model E05.

Previews provide insight into IBM plans and direction. Specific availability dates, ordering information, and terms and conditions will be provided when the product is announced.

Key prerequisites
The TS7510 requires a 3952 Tape Frame containing one or two TS7510 Virtualization Engines, two TS7510 Cache Controllers, and optional TS7510 Cache Modules. A customer-supplied management console and the TS7510 V1R1 Software program (5639-CC7) are also required. The TS7510 attaches to selected IBM pSeries®, RS/6000®, RS/6000 SP(TM), IBM xSeries®, Netfinity®, IBM mainframe Linux(TM), Sun, Windows(TM) 2000, Windows 2003, Linux, and other UNIX® and PC servers. Appropriate levels of host software are required. Refer to the Technical information section for details.
