Virtual Tape Appliance features dual-target save platform.

Press Release Summary:

Designed to meet massive data storage requirements, CentricStor® Virtual Tape Appliance (VTA) enables intelligent data backup to disk or tape from mainframes or open systems. It allows administrators to use one system to ensure protection of all their data by defining what data should be backed up to VTA's disk-based cache and what should be stored on tape. VTL cache scales up to 1 petabyte, and number of logical volumes that can be processed in one system is 1,500,000.

Fujitsu Announces First Solution Designed to Meet Massive Data Storage Requirements

Fujitsu Virtual Tape Appliance Enables Intelligent Data Backup to Disk or Tape From Mainframes or Open Systems

SUNNYVALE, CA -- 12/04/07 -- Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation today announced the CentricStor® Virtual Tape Appliance (VTA), the first solution designed to meet the growing demand to store and protect massive data volumes for longer periods of time.

Offering the industry's first dual-target save platform, CentricStor allows administrators to use one system to ensure the protection of all their data by defining what data should be backed up to the VTA's disk-based cache, and what should be stored on tape. Designed for thin provisioning, CentricStor provides the industry's largest backup capacities. The virtual tape library (VTL) cache scales up to a massive one petabyte, and the number of logical volumes that can be processed in one system is 1,500,000. CentricStor also backs up data from both mainframes and open systems platforms, enabling data centers to consolidate their storage processes for greater control and simpler management.

Intelligent Data Protection with CentricStor
The ability to define what information should automatically be retained on disk and what should subsequently be saved to tape streamlines the backup process and makes it possible to incorporate Lifecycle Management (ILM) criteria, such as data importance, and align backups to different Service Level Agreements (SLA). It also makes it easier to meet shorter recovery times. CentricStor offers superior connectivity with True Tape Virtualization and enables outstanding reductions in TCO by consolidating all backup storage devices. The powerful CentricStor Grid Architecture features unmatched scalability and disaster resilience for every type of data center.

"Our recent research finds that recovery speed and reliability continue to impede organizations' data protection efforts today," says Heidi Biggar, storage analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "By adding disk-to-disk support to CentricStor -- and expanding the size of the CentricStor cache to 1PB -- Fujitsu Computer Systems does not just put a 'band-aid' on an age-old data protection problem, it provides a real solution -- one that allows customers to match data attributes to their current data protection requirements."

"Enterprises must now back up an ever-increasing volume of digital information more quickly and flexibly than ever," commented Dave Egan, senior vice president of storage at Fujitsu Computer Systems. "They must also take into account the importance of the data and how quickly it is possible to access that data. With the CentricStore appliance's dual-target save, they can now easily decide which storage medium they want to use for what data."

High-Level Service and Security
In addition to existing maintenance services, Fujitsu offers enhanced, proactive services to increase the availability of CentricStor. Live Monitoring and Health Check, for example, include Fujitsu monitoring of CentricStor systems: if an error is detected, rule-based actions can be taken automatically. In addition, regular system tests identify possible risks, so proactive problem-solving activities can start before errors occur. Customers can also obtain service management for their complete data protection solution, including servers and tape libraries, so Fujitsu takes complete responsibility for the uninterrupted operation of all components -- from taking the call through identifying the cause and even, if necessary, involving other service providers in solving the problem.

Green Storage with CentricStor
Tape drives, which use energy only when data is accessed, are a more energy-efficient medium than disk drives, which are typically online 24x7. Since CentricStor uses both types of drives, the VTA is an effective way for data centers to more easily maximize the use of tape to conserve energy and protect the environment.
