Active Power Delivers Critical Power Protection for Mid-Range Applications with New CleanSource Battery-Free Systems

New Models Assure Continuous Power for 65kVA to 130kVA Requirements

Austin, Texas - August 19, 2003 - Active Power (NASDAQ:ACPW), a leading developer of battery-free power quality products, has announced the production release of its first line of mid-range power products, CleanSource® UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems. With four models in power ratings from 65kVA to 130kVA, the new offering provides an environmentally friendly, low-maintenance solution for assuring continuous power in a variety of applications from process control to broadcasting to data processing.

Using Active Power's proven flywheel technology, the CleanSource models address critical power needs with advanced power conditioning capabilities that include voltage regulation, transient protection and harmonics cancellation. When coupled with a standby generator, the CleanSource UPS creates a continuous power system that protects sensitive loads against short power disturbances as well as extended outages.

Combining a rugged steel flywheel with advanced electronics, the system stores kinetic energy in a constantly spinning, quiet, low-friction, solid steel disc. Stored energy from the flywheel is instantly converted to electricity that powers critical loads during utility disturbances or until a standby generator takes over. Featuring high-efficiency operation and excellent overload capability, the systems need not be oversized to accommodate high startup current demands from protected equipment and use only a fraction of the space of a comparable battery-based system, sporting dimensions of only 34 inches (865mm) deep by 58.6 inches (1,488mm) wide by 78 inches (2,080mm) tall.

"We have worked hard to develop a line of battery-free products for broader mid-range markets so customers can achieve the high reliability and reduced operating costs previously available only at higher power levels," noted Joe Pinkerton, chairman and CEO of Active Power. "With its extremely small footprint, non-toxic construction and high efficiency, Active Power now offers an excellent option for an array of new applications."

Sophisticated design coupled with battery-free operation and efficiency as high as 96.5 percent assure low life-cycle costs for the CleanSource products by minimizing maintenance requirements, lowering electrical consumption and reducing cooling needs. In addition, the CleanSource products operate comfortably from 0°C to 40°C with no degradation in performance. Featuring low input harmonic distortion and outstanding overload capacity along with high efficiency, the systems work seamlessly with standby generators, eliminating the need to oversize because the CleanSource system effectively insulates the generator from block loads and transients. Software-configurable integration with generators enables maximum system reliability while optimizing total system operation to protect the most critical applications.

CleanSource battery-free systems are available now, and have a lower total lifecycle cost than comparable battery-based systems. Standard product includes internal static bypass, serial communications, LCD monitoring and control panel, programmable I/O contacts and programmable auto restart. Available options include GenSTART(TM) 24-volt genset start power, remote notification and monitoring, CSView(TM) real-time monitoring software, remote emergency power off (REPO), 4-wire input and output, MODBUS and SNMP interfaces, internal maintenance bypass and OSHPD pre-approved seismic Zone-4 anchoring capability.

With over 300 installations worldwide and more than 6 million hours of field operation, Active Power's products are a proven alternative to problematic battery-based UPS systems. The CleanSource UPS product family is the broadest battery-free UPS line in the world, now ranging from 65 kVA to 1200 kVA. Recently recognized by Frost & Sullivan for its ability to satisfy customer needs with new and innovative products, Active Power continues to rapidly expand its product line to address the needs of new market segments and geographies.
