Inova Solves CompactPCI Power Problems

HYANNIS, MA., March 13, 2002 - Inova Computers offers an innovative solution for power fluctuations in CompactPCI systems - an uninterruptible power supply unit.

Inova's ICP-UPS is designed for use when the power source to a CompactPCI system is not stable or subject to fluctuation and the operating system is Microsoft's Windows NT 4.0 or greater. The ICP-UPS provides the required power backup allowing the operating system to shut down in a controlled manner following a power outage in order to maintain data integrity and ensure that the next system boot occurs without problems. The ICP-UPS can eliminate system crashes caused by power fluctuations. Applications for the ICP-UPS include Embedded Systems, Robotics, Industrial Control and semiconductor equipment, Automation, Telecommunication, Traffic and Transportation, Energy Management.

Inova's ICP-UPS is more than just a battery; onboard control logic continually monitors the supply line to check for fluctuations, enters a charge state or even standby mode of operation. A high capacity Ni-Cd battery energizes the application for up to 60 seconds (typical) in the event of power failure resulting from brownouts or power-off actions.

Power fail warning is given to the CPU via a handshake line on the CompactPCI backplane or the front panel D-Sub connector. If the operating system is programmed to expect signals from the UPS, then a safe power down (or other event) of Windows NT can be initiated.

Once the on-board Ni-Cd battery has been used for the designated purpose, the next time the CompactPCI system is powered up the UPS enters a charge state and needs to have sufficient charge before being ready for duty again. The Memory Effect associated with Ni-Cd batteries does not appear in the ICP-UPS as the battery is never trickle-charged for long periods.

Because the width of the ICP-UPS occupies two slots on a CompactPCI backplane, Inova has developed a two-slot non-bussed backplane extension to the standard 32-bit 8-slot backplane to accommodate the ICP-UPS without depriving the system of otherwise usable slots.
