Universal Vessel Seal supports 4 contacting technologies.

Press Release Summary:

With modular cartridge design, gas-lubricated 7800 Series supports contacting dry, contacting wet, non-contacting, or combination of non- and dry contacting seal technology without change of adaptive hardware. Type 7828G non-contacting, gas lubricated double seal uses dry nitrogen as barrier gas and spiral groove technology to separate primary seal faces. Hybrid 7828GD offers combination of non-contacting seal faces in-board and dry contacting faces out-board.

John Crane Announces New Universal Vessel Seal

(Morton Grove, IL - March 22, 2005) John Crane - the world's largest supplier of engineered sealing systems and associated products - has announced the availability of a newly developed universal vessel seal.

With a modular cartridge design, the heavy-duty gas-lubricated Universal Seal (7800 Series) is ideal for use in a wide variety of mixing and agitating equipment, as well as other top entry mixer applications. The Type 7800 uses modular hardware, allowing for maximum interchangeability and efficiency. This convertible format will support contacting dry, contacting wet, non-contacting or a combination of non-contacting and dry contacting seal technology without the need to change any adaptive hardware. The patented grooved rotor allows equal lift in the presence of up to 0.125-inch radial run-out, while the primary ring shape responds under pressure, further enhancing very low speed face separation. Lift-off and the double cartridge uses common springs, allowing for seal-adjustment to axial motion and the optimized drive minimizes seal face to seal cartridge hardware interaction eliminating low speed hang-up.

According to Mike Kalodimos, Chemical Market Sector Manager, the Type 7800 was created specifically in response to the needs of the marketplace.

"John Crane's unique ability to listen to our customers' needs and then develop a concept into a product is evident with the introduction of the Type 7800," said Kalodimos. "Utilizing our extensive engineering capabilities and Solid Edge CAD-CAM, we partnered with all stakeholders - from marketing to engineering, quality and manufacturing - to bring this unique product to market."

Kalodimos also stated that that the elimination of seal wear and debris is a key benefit of the Type 7800 Series.

"Conventional seals wear and therefore deposit debris in the vessel," said Kalodimos. "However, through the elimination of seal lubrication liquid, the Type 7800 series can be configured to avoid wear and debris and this equates to zero potential for batch contamination. This is especially important in biotech and pharmaceutical applications."

To meet the needs of a variety of applications, the Type 7800 is available in two formats:

- Type 7828G: This non-contacting, gas lubricated double seal uses dry nitrogen as a barrier gas and patented spiral groove technology to separate the primary seal faces, thereby eliminating contact, creating a wear-free environment as well as ensuring 100-percent product purity and no batch contamination. Patented features enable the seal to maintain lift-off in the presence of extreme radial run-out and even angular misalignment of the seal faces. The cartridge is reverse pressure-balanced and will remain closed in the event that barrier gas pressures is lost. All materials used are FDA approved.

- Type 7828GD: When reduced barrier gas consumption is desirable, the unique hybrid 7828GD is the ideal solution since it offers a combination of non-contacting seal faces in-board and dry contacting faces out-board. The Type 7828GD uses adaptive hardware that is identical to the 7828G.

According to John Crane, two patents are pending for this unique product: one for a special placement of spiral grooves on the element which establishes the balance diameter and the other for a special pressure responsive primary ring shape.
