Universal Machining Center offers 5-sided/5-axis contouring.

Press Release Summary:

Offering automatic interchangeable head capability, Model U5-1500 provides work envelope of 15 ft to unlimited X-axis, 8.2 or 12 ft Y-axis, and 3.3 or 5 ft Z-axis. Machine makes heavy cuts in large parts of aluminum, steel, titanium, and difficult, crusty forgings. Head configurations include 50 taper, 22 kW/30 hp, 4,000 or 6,000 rpm; HSK-63A, 30 kW/50 hp, 15,000 or 24,000 rpm; and vertical or horizontal 50-taper heads providing 22 kW/30 hp at 6,000 rpm.

Original Press Release:

New MAG Cincinnati U5-1500 Cuts Setup Time With Full 5-axis Contouring and 5-sided Machining of Large Parts for Aerospace, Off-Road, and Other Industries

The "Lean" revolution begins for large parts; Universal Machining Center offers ready-for-anything configurability, delivers heavy cuts in fewer setups for faster processing and reduced WIP.

Cincinnati, OH - July 10, 2007 - Machining of big parts joins the "Lean" revolution with a new platform of 5-axis MAG Cincinnati U5 Universal Machining Centers. Five-sided/full 5-axis contouring and automatic interchangeable head capability on the U5-1500 deliver faster processing to reduce WIP (work in process) on large, high-value parts, while avoiding refixturing and setups for greater part accuracies. X/Y/Z travel on the U5-1500 provides an extra large work envelope: 4.6 m (15 ft.) to unlimited X axis, Y axis of 2.5 m (8.2 ft.) or 3.7 m (12 ft.), and Z-axis of 1 m (3.3 ft.) or 1.5 m (5 ft.). A vast range of options - including a rail or moving table platform, automatic tool change and especially automatic head change (in less than two minutes) - gives the machine universal, ready-for-anything configurability.

U5 application versatility brings greater throughput and processing efficiencies to "big machine" manufacturers in the aerospace, off-road and heavy equipment, energy, oilfield and power generation, die-mold, marine, mining, and other industries. The U5 makes large, tough cuts in big parts of aluminum, steel and titanium, and particularly difficult, crusty forgings. Five-axis and head-change capabilities avoid machine downtime for part reorientation and setups, undesirable with massive workpieces.

Four different U5 head configurations cover a spectrum of machining requirements. Users can select two different 5-axis heads - 50 taper, 22 kW/30hp, 4000 or 6000 rpm, and HSK-63A, 30kW/50hp, 15,000 or 24,000 rpm - as well as vertical or horizontal 50-taper heads providing 22 kW/30hp at 6000 rpm. Users can apply the optimal head for each cut. Heads store in their own cradles. Automatic head change takes less than two minutes, minimizing parasitic out-of-cut time. Five-axis and horizontal heads feature continuous C-axis to keep the spindle in-cut without running out of C-axis travel or waiting for C-axis to unwind.

Strong, rigid rails feature proven boxway technology and racks for smooth, powerful movement. The base machine comes standard with 4.3 m (14 ft.) of travel and can be expanded in 4.3 m (14 ft.) increments.

The automatic tool changer (ATC) is mounted outside the work zone for isolation from contamination by chips and coolant. Tool magazines are expandable, providing storage for 60 to 120 tools on the bridge/moving table machine and 45 or 63 tools on the rail machine.

The U5-1500 provides superior precision on large, critical parts with positioning accuracies of 0.03 mm (0.0012") in the X axis, 0.03 mm (0.0012") in the Y-Z axes, and 10 arc second accuracy in the C axis. A choice of proven easy-to-use controls is available - either the Fanuc 300i-MA or Siemens 840D.
