Universal Extends Flagship Platform Portfolio

Universal Instruments has expanded the capabilities of its Genesis platform offering by augmenting the successful dual-gantry (D-Series) configuration with a quad-gantry (Q-Series) and two single-gantry (S-Series) models.

As the industry's fastest quad-gantry placement machine, the Genesis GC-120Q's superior cost-per-placement and throughput-per-square meter metrics makes it ideal for the high-end chip market. Launched alongside this machine, the single-beam GC-30S and GX-11S will complement the GC-120Q with additional flexibility.

Enhancing the performance and scalability of Genesis line solutions, the new machines also enable manufacturers to address a broader range of surface mount assembly applications. Having extended its capabilities in this way, Genesis now provides a common platform solution that satisfies the demands of today's dynamic environment, regardless of product mix or production volumes.

Leveraging the fastest head tact time in the industry (55ms) and configured with four Lightning heads, the quad-gantry GC-120Q, is the Genesis workhorse. The machine is also equipped with a speed-enhancing positioning system, feeder, and software technologies - generating an unrivalled maximum throughput of 120,000 components per hour and addressing the broadest component range in the industry.

A combination of patented tools for precision placement, including high-accuracy individual direct-drive theta in the spindles, and closed-loop controls for X,Y, Z, Phi, high-speed valves and pick/place touchdown, give the GC-120Q the outright lead in small part performance with an accuracy of 65 microns at 4 sigma (Cpk 1.33). While a range of automated features compensate for variability in components, feeders, and boards, the Genesis design also prioritises ease of maintenance, minimal downtime, and low cost-of-ownership.

The GC-30S, configured with a 30-spindle Lightning head, and the GX-11S multi-function version, configured with a 7-spindle FlexJet3 and 4-spindle InLine4 HF head with 5kg placement force, supplement the GC-120Q with additional feeder capacity and world-class multi-function capability up to 150mm-long connectors. Optimising the Genesis portfolio's range from high-volume solutions to the finest high-mix lines offered today, the S-Series platforms also offer very large board capability to meet the needs of high-end server and router applications.

"These new products clearly make the Genesis all-platform line the best solution available today. The ability to achieve outstanding throughput without sacrificing performance in higher-mix environments is a distinct advantage for today's manufacturers," explains Universal's Genesis Platform Director, Scott Gerhart. "Along with the single-beam platforms, the GC-120Q gives Universal a powerful solution to address the consumer, communication, computer, and automotive production environments. The flexibility afforded by the patented Lightning Head's 30mm square component range is what truly sets us apart form the competition. It allows the introduction of new products without head or module swapping - a huge plus as product mixes increase."
