Metrobility Introduces Industrial Ethernet Product Line

Ethernet-based connectivity from the factory floor to the control room

Merrimack, NH-September 2, 2003- Metrobility Optical Systems today announced that it is introducing a modular, dual DC powered, DIN-rail mounted, two slot chassis to support industrial applications which may be migrating from legacy fieldbus interfaces to optical Ethernet. Utilizing the higher speeds, extended distances, and electrical interference immunity of optical Ethernet enables plant information systems to be integrated into a high availability single, real-time database to improve the manufacturing process. Metrobility's RD20-24 is the first extensively managed, modular media converter chassis for the industrial market.

"We have been using Metrobility's product in industrial automation applications with great success and are now seeing a much higher demand for industrial Ethernet devices," stated Jan Grove-Knutsen, product manager Ethernet automation, Last Mile Communication in Norway.

"With Metrobility's new modular DIN-rail chassis, we can now offer a ready-to-install solution that can easily be customized with any of the company's wide range of media conversion line cards."

The RD20-24 chassis supports two modules which offer copper-to-fiber connectivity between the copper-based devices on the factory floor to the control room. Fiber to the control room presents many advantages since it is immune to noise and supports extended distances which may be found in large plants or even between buildings in campus environments. Further, the device can be managed from a central SNMP management station with an intuitive graphical user interface when configured with Metrobility's Access Line Cards.

"Metrobility's ability to deliver enhanced diagnostics was pivotal to integrating their chassis-based devices into a process control system utilizing the Obermeier Software SNMP OPC Server which enabled a full view of the entire enterprise, including the infrastructure, of a major power utility," stated Steven Jones, managing partner of The S4 Group. "The ability to actually see the infrastructure supporting the automation system makes monitoring of the customer's facilities much more effective."

The RD20-24 supports an operating temperature range of 0 degree Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius and has dual 24Vdc power inputs. The chassis can be equipped with a variety of line cards to support AUI, BNC, 10/100 Ethernet, single-strand, bi-directional wavelengths (BWDM) for double fiber capacity, Gigabit Ethernet, redundant links, a four-port switch and remote management capabilities through the company's Radiance Access Line Card. It offers support for both singlemode and multimode fiber and distances up to 100km. Depending on the configuration, troubleshooting tools such as link loss carry forward, link loss return, auto-recovery and far end fault are also available.

Pricing and Availability
List pricing for the chassis with one line card starts at $498 with one (1) 10/100Mbps copper to 100Mbps multimode fiber interface, $798 for one (1) 100Mbps copper to dual fiber redundant line protection option, $498 with a four-port 10/100Mbps switch card and $898 for a single 1Gbps copper to multimode fiber interface. Units will be available for shipment in late September.
