Tunable Laser Assembly has built-in control electronics.

Press Release Summary:

Based on MSA standards, Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly (ITLA) provides DWDM optical network systems solution with DTL C13 Series Dynamically Tunable Laser and electro-optical technology. Solid-state product comes in hermetically-sealed, 26-pin butterfly package and meets reliability standards of Telcordia GR-468-CORE requirements. By tuning over entire C-band on 50 GHz ITU channel grid, one ITLA can serve as backup or replacement for all WDM laser sources within DWDM system.

Pirelli Broadband Solutions Launches Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly (ITLA) At OFC/NFOEC 2006

Milan and Atlanta, GA - March 07, 2006 - Pirelli Broadband Solutions, a new broadband access and photonics company within the Pirelli Group, will introduce its latest product, a compact module with built-in tunable laser and control electronics, at the Optical Fiber Communication/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in Anaheim, Calif., on March 7, 2006.

The Pirelli ITLA is an ideal solution for DWDM optical network systems. Based on MSA standards, it can be easily integrated into an MSA 300 PIN board or a line card. At the core of the ITLA is the Pirelli Dynamically Tunable Laser and patented electro-optical technology. A hermetically-sealed 26-pin butterfly package increases reliability and decreases form factor. With no moving parts needed to achieve tunability, the Pirelli ITLA is designed to meet the reliability standards established by Telcordia GR-468-CORE requirements. By tuning over the entire C-band on the 50 Ghz ITU channel grid, one Pirelli ITLA can serve as a backup or a replacement for all WDM laser sources within a DWDM system. As WDM transponders account for a majority of the costs in an optical network, the Pirelli ITLA can deliver cost savings through a reduction in inventory. The
Pirelli ITLA guarantees fast switching time for dynamic provisioning. Telecom operators now have the flexibility to switch to alternative channels and reconfigure added channels in less time. The Pirelli ITLA will be available for commercial use third quarter 2006.

"By adding the Pirelli ITLA to our laser portfolio, we are able to address more of the market demand," said Pierluigi Franco, senior vice president, Marketing and Product Management - Photonics for Pirelli Broadband Solutions S.p.A. "For those systems vendors looking for a more flexible and highly-integrated solution we can now offer the ITLA and for those wanting to design their own optics we can provide our Dynamically Tunable Laser as a stand alone component. Both solutions are high performing and deliver cost savings through a reduction in inventory."

Luis Tondi Resta, director, Engineering for Pirelli Broadband Solutions N.A. added, "From the feedback we are receiving from our customers in North America, we know that a number of networking vendors have designed their transponders with dedicated space for an ITLA. As network operators optimize their DWDM systems for the arrival of new bandwidth-intensive services such as IPTV, the Pirelli ITLA will play an important role by delivering greater efficiencies and reducing the OPEX burden."

Pirelli Broadband Solutions specializes in broadband access technology and photonics. The Access division provides a range of broadband CPE including access gateways, set-top boxes, multiple handsets, and a remote management system; while the Photonics division leverages nanotechnology and its use of tunable and pluggable solutions to deliver multi-wavelength components, modules and subsystems including tunable lasers, RoF, GPON Triplexers, and a CWDM metro access system.

A complete portfolio of pluggable and tunable components, modules and sub systems will be on display in booth 2469 including Pirelli's G-PON Integrated Optical Triplexer, Dynamically Tunable Laser - DTL C13 Series High Power Full C-Band tunable laser source, Radio over Fiber, and City8TM CWDM Metro Access System.

Pirelli G-PON Integrated Optical Triplexer delivers performance, high quality and cost savings to telecom operators deploying triple-play services through FTTx architectures. Electronic packaging, highly-automated production processes and deep integration of electronics; lasers and photodiodes at dye level are the technical advantages delivering costs savings while maintaining the highest quality standard and achieving the latest ITU-T G.984.2 B+ class requirements.

Dynamically Tunable Laser - DTL C13 Series, High Power Full C-Band tunable laser source is a continuous wave external cavity laser for advanced DWDM optical network systems. DTL C13 tunes over the entire C-band on the ITU-T 50 GHz channel grid. DTL C13 is designed to meet Telecordia GR-468-CORE qualification requirements - no moving parts are needed to achieve tunability. Additionally, the hermetically-sealed 26-pin-butterfly packaging, increases reliability and decreases form factor.

City8TM is a carrier-class platform providing high-bandwidth, managed services over a single fiber pair. Pirelli's CWDM is a 16 channel-capable system that supports SONET/SDH, FC, GbE, ESCON, and FICON interfaces. Field programmable electronic core and pluggable SFP optical transceivers allow the telecom operator to address all possible network applications. Sub-lambda multiplexing enables the transmission of multiple services over a single wavelength while maintaining transparent client services.

Senior executives from Pirelli Broadband Solutions will be accessible before and during the show. To arrange an interview, please contact Natalie Saville at Natalie@gbcspr.com
