New S50 Photoelectric Sensor Platform Introduces 15 Different Sensor Models in Common 18-mm Barrel Housing
World's largest tubular photoelectric sensor family features standardized housing design to simplify mounting and maximize inventory efficiencies
May 2003 - Balluff's new S50 photoelectric sensor line eliminates the headaches of stocking and mounting numerous sensor styles by offering 15 different sensor models in a standard 18 mm barrel housing. The comprehensive S50 line is the world's largest tubular photoelectric sensor family, providing installation ease while streamlining inventories with one convenient form factor that accommodates tubular and block-style mounting. The S50 sensors are available in diffuse, retroreflective, through-beam, background suppression, fiber optic and Class 1 laser versions to suit a wide range of applications on assembly machines, conveyors, robots, packaging equipment, printing machinery, AS/RS and filling/bagging machines.
The affordable S50 line provides one form factor for myriad photoelectric sensor configurations, allowing users to pick their performance without worrying about the complications of multiple housing designs. It offers:

The innovative 18mm housing design is inherently flexible, allowing screw mounting for tubular and block-style configurations, and offering straight and right-angle sensing faces. Standardization with the S50's shared-housing design eliminates special bracketry and mounting considerations for different sensor types, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
The S50 sensors are powered by 10-30 VDC and protected against short circuits and overload conditions. The S50 housings have highly visible LED function indicators for quick setup, and feature IP67 protection. Standard S50 models feature a 270° potentiometer for sensitivity adjustment. Advanced versions are available with Balluff's patented EASYtouch(TM) pushbutton setup, eliminating the pot screwdriver with simple pushbutton teach-in.
Class 1 laser versions combine safe operation with highly visible red laser emission for fast setup. Powered by a 650 nm laser source, the Class 1 sensors are available in diffuse, polarized retroreflective and through-beam versions. These laser sensors provide high-accuracy detection capabilities, with diffuse versions providing small spot size to 0.5 mm. Class 1 operation eliminates the potential for eye damage from the laser beam and the need for beam termination.
