TI Introduces 3.3-V and 5-V Families of Full-Duplex RS-485 Transceivers

Six Devices Provide Rich Feature Set for Industrial Applications

DALLAS (Nov. 16, 2005) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) [NYSE: TXN] introduced today six full-featured, full-duplex RS-485 transceivers that conserve power, provide optimum AC performance for key operating speeds, and allow up to 256 devices on a single RS-485 bus. (See www.ti.com/sc05244.) With electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection in excess of 15 kV (human body model), these products provide a robust interface for both RS-485 and RS-422 applications such as industrial and building automation, point-of-sale terminals and networks, data terminal equipment/data communications equipment interfaces, and utility meters.

The SN65HVD33/34/35 and SN65HVD53/54/55 are differential line drivers and receivers, with separate input and output pins for full-duplex (4-wire) bus communication designs. The transceivers are designed for interoperation with ANSI TIA/EIA-485A, TIA/EIA-422-B, ITU-T V.11 and ISO 8482:1993 standard-compliant devices.

All the devices provide key features and options to give designers the flexibility to maximize their system performance, such as slew rate-controlled outputs to avoid unwanted reflections, and higher-accuracy data transmission for signaling rates of 1, 5 and 25 Mbps. The families also provide a 1/8-unit load option, which allows for up to 256 nodes on the bus. Power supply options include 3.3-V operation for the HVD3x family and 5-V operation for the HVD5x family. When in the low-current standby mode, the HVD3x supply current typically drops to 22 nA, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications. The HVD5x family provides strong bus drivers with differential output voltages well above the RS-485/RS-422 requirements. This provides signal margin for applications with interconnection losses or noise immunity concerns.

The HVD3x/5x devices are among TI's diverse offering of integrated circuits for industrial applications, including the TMS320C2000TM digital signal controllers and MSP430 ultra-low power microcontrollers, as well as a range of precision amplifiers, data converters and power management products.

Key Features
o 3.3-V operation for HVD3x family; 5-V operation for HVD5x family
o 1/8th Unit-Load Option Available (up to 256 nodes on the bus)

Available Today
The SN65HVD3x/5x devices are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The devices are packaged in a 14-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package and are priced at $1.85 for the HVD3x devices and $1.75 for the HVD5x devices in 1,000-unit quantities. Please see the table below for each device's power supply, signaling rate, unit load and price.

Part Number Power Supply Signaling Rate Unit Loads Price (1ku)
SN65HVD33D 3.3 V 25 Mbps 1/2 $1.85
SN65HVD34D 3.3 V 5 Mbps 1/8 $1.85
SN65HVD35D 3.3 V 1 Mbps 1/8 $1.85
SN65HVD53D 5 V 25 Mbps 1/2 $1.75
SN65HVD54D 5 V 5 Mbps 1/8 $1.75
SN65HVD55D 5 V 1 Mbps 1/8 $1.75

TI will introduce other additions to the HVD3x/5x families in 2006, including products that implement receiver equalization technology for improved performance in long distance applications.
