ON Semiconductor Expands IVN Transceiver Family with New GIFT-Compliant High-Speed, Low-Power CAN ASSP

New device further expands range of certified CAN and LIN transceiver ICs

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Oct. 20, 2008 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions has announced a new high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) transceiver IC for automotive in-vehicle networking (IVN) applications. The new IC further expands the company's range of IVN parts that are certified in accordance with CAN and LIN interoperability standards.
The NCV7341 CAN transceiver, which offers very low power consumption, is certified to the requirements of the Generalized Interoperable Fault Tolerant (GIFT) CAN transceiver specification and is pin compatible with devices from third parties. As a result, designers can use the device in new IVN applications and as a 'drop-in' replacement in existing applications securing second sourcing towards end customers.

ON Semiconductor's new application specific standard product (ASSP) provides the interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical bus and is fully compliant with the ISO 11898-5 standard for CAN physical layer transmission in automotive IVNs at rates up to 1 megabit per second (Mbit/s). A sleep mode and a very low current stand-by mode (20 microamp (µA)) with remote wake up via the bus provide engineers with significant flexibility in reducing power consumption. In addition, an integrated inhibit switch can be used to further reduce overall power consumption by disabling external voltage regulators.

As with other products in the ON Semiconductor CAN ASSP portfolio, the NCV7341 offers exceptional electromagnetic capability (EMC) performance. Careful matching of output signals and a voltage source for stabilizing the recessive bus level if a split termination is used minimize electromagnetic emissions (EME) and eliminate the need for additional filtering components. A differential receiver with a high common-mode input range helps minimize electromagnetic interface (EMI).

The NCV7341 features a number of built-in safety features including thermal protection. Bus pins are also protected against voltage transients that are common in the noisy automotive environment.

Suitable for connecting up to 110 nodes, the new IC offers microcontroller-compatible input levels for ease of design. The device is supplied in a 14-pin SOIC package and has an operating temperature range of -40º C to 125 ºC.

The new device, which has already received 'OEM-approved' status from a global automotive manufacturer, is the latest in a series of IVN transceivers that are certified to relevant interoperability standards. As well as GIFT-compliant CAN transceivers, ON Semiconductor also offers products such as the NCV7420 series of LIN transceivers, which are certified in accordance with the requirements of the SAE J2602-1 standard for LIN 2.0-based vehicle networks. These devices - which bring together LIN transceiver and voltage regulator functionality in a single, low-power, mixed-signal chip - have also received 'OEM-approved' status with global automotive manufacturers.

Pricing and Availability

The new NCV7341 CAN transceiver is priced at $1.53 per unit in quantities of 1000 or more.
