New 100mm Thyristor for Medium Voltage Applications
Westcode Semiconductors Limited (An IXYS company) announces a new addition to its range of large area medium voltage thyristors. Manufactured on a single 100mm diameter silicon wafer, the new 5.2kV device incorporates a specially designed distributed gate architecture for improved turn-on characteristics and di/dt capability along with additional processing to reduce tq and recovery time.
The additional processing used in the medium voltage thyristor gives a more predictable dynamic characteristic than a conventional phase control device, with a more favourable trade off between the static and dynamic characteristics. The unique properties of these devices make them particularly suitable for MV applications. These characteristics also make the devices suitable for series operation, with a reduced dependency on high loss dynamic sharing components..
The thyristor has RMS current rating of 6900A and is encapsulated in a fully hermetic 100mm diameter pole face, pressure contact package. The K3503FC450 & K3503FC520 thyristors, rated at 4500V and 5200V respectively, are encapsulated in industry standard 35mm thick packages.
The new thyristor is suited to all medium voltage applications which require a thyristor with high average current rating including DC drives, Soft-starts and Utility applications such as HVDC, static VAr compensators, excitation and transfer switches.
