Raytheon Combines Thermal Imaging, Handheld Computing and Visible Light Camera on the New 500DX Model for the Industrial Market

DALLAS (July 21, 2003) - The 500DX, which combines a radiometric thermal-imaging camera, a handheld iPAQ PDA computer, and a visible-light camera, is now available from Raytheon Infrared. The new, competitively priced, industrial-use camera enables engineers, inspectors and managers to detect heat produced by engines, motors or fluids to indicate faulty parts or processes before damage or failures occur. Preventive maintenance using thermal imaging can help industrial managers avoid costly downtime, safety hazards or plant shutdowns.

The 500DX, incorporating some of the same equipment as Raytheon's popular 500D model, offers as a standard feature a visible light camera, allowing the user to organize and process both thermal and visible images. It also includes the ability to have a simultaneous split screen display. This allows industrial managers to easily see and document the difference between a component's appearance to the naked eye and its appearance when viewed with a thermal imager.

"We are very excited about the addition of the 500DX to our industrial family of products. The 500DX offers manufacturing, inspection and utility companies a competitively priced way to protect assets," said Raytheon Infrared President Chris Bade.

Features of the 500DX include a 35mm focal length lens - providing the optimum combination of close proximity and distance performance; an extended calibration range, and a new electronic zoom function that increases the view up to 16X with the new iPAQ PDA. With the number of features offered, the 500DX rivals the resolution, imaging performance and usability of cameras priced considerably higher and can provide a rapid return on investment.

"The value of thermal imaging for industrial applications like predictive maintenance or process monitoring is beyond measure," said Raytheon Infrared Director of Industrial Market Products Stanley Kummer. "Featuring both the visible and thermal cameras, the 500DX can greatly improve reliability and identify faulty parts or anomalies, helping users avoid costly failures and damage to equipment."
