Agilent Technologies Enhances Test Set to Support Emerging Wireless Technologies

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 10, 2004 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced enhancements to its flagship Agilent 8960 wireless communications test set (E5515C) that support technological advances for GSM, GPRS and EGPRS formats. The enhancements include hardware to support EGPRS test capability and interfaces for new features offered in the multiformat Agilent 8960's test and lab applications. Collectively, these latest products enable 2.5G and 3G wireless device designers, manufacturers and repair centers to rapidly satisfy consumer demand for new wireless devices and applications.

The Agilent 8960's new RF source hardware for GSM, GPRS and EGPRS technologies creates a one-box network emulator for wireless chipset, application and device designers. It provides RF measurement capability, real-time phone-to-Internet connectivity, and live user data transfers for verifying real-life applications. These new multiformat Agilent 8960 lab applications streamline test development by allowing designers to easily switch between data and voice connections, send short message service (SMS) messages while on a voice call, and suspend and resume packet-switched data transfers that are interrupted by a voice call. Each lab application also includes Wireless Protocol Advisor (WPA) software for real-time and post-capture analysis.

"More wireless phones are tested in production on the Agilent 8960 than all other wireless test sets combined," said Al Schmidt, vice president of Agilent's Wireless Appliances Unit. "The 8960, our flagship wireless test platform, protects the customer's investment with flexibility to add new features and applications addressing new and evolving wireless standards and technologies."

For multimode device manufacturers, revised Agilent 8960 test applications combined with new 8960 RF source hardware offer EGPRS test capability and application fast-switching to speed wireless device performance verification. Technology-specific applications, designed for high-volume automated production test environments, provide all essential connection types and signaling. New applications based on Microsoft® Visual Basic.NET for the Agilent E656X Wireless Test Manager (WTM) help expedite test plan implementation and optimize automated testing of wireless devices.

For repair centers, the single Agilent 8960 hardware solution can be used with test applications and WTM software to cost-effectively test a wide range of devices, including new devices and new technology formats. The flexible platform allows repair centers to quickly screen returned phones, identify problems, speed the repair process and reduce phone return costs.
