Murata Introduces Thermo-String Temperature Sensor

Long Wire Lead Thermistor Provides Design Flexibility and Cost Savings

Smyrna, GA, January 13, 2009 - Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today introduced the Thermo-String temperature sensor. This enhanced thermistor is fitted with long wire leads (up to 150mm) to allow placement close to hot spot areas that may not be on the printed circuit board (PCB) or reachable by surface mount negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors on the motherboard. Utilizing Murata's current NCP series surface mount NTC thermistor line to provide accurate temperature measurement over wide temperature ranges, the Thermo-String NXF series proffers a convenient leaded package to reduce costs since there is no need to design a new thermistor from scratch.

Aside from the benefits of long wire leads and cost savings, the Thermo-String offers proven performance in a small package. With a maximum head size of only 2mm, the sensor provides operating temperatures in the range of -40C to +125C for commercial grade. Suitable for lead free soldering, the sturdy thermistor is also resistant to mechanical vibrations and shock and meets ELV/UL requirements. Due to its numerous attributes, the Thermo-String is ideal for use on a variety of products, including battery cells, servers, PCs, power tools, measuring instruments, medical equipment and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).

"Murata's temperature sensing expertise is demonstrated in the Thermo-String's valuable features," stated Mitch Nozaki, Product Manager. "By enhancing an existing thermistor line, Murata gives customer's an innovative, trusted solution to their design challenges without increasing the product price."

The Thermo-String is available for $0.16 to 0.24 in volume. Lead-time is approximately eight weeks. Additional purchasing info can be found on-line at www.murata-northamerica.com.

Murata is the market leader in chip NTC thermistors and uses semi-conductive ceramics and electrode printing technologies to produce both NTC and PTC devices. In addition to the leaded product, Murata is continuously introducing new smaller chip size NTC and PTC products that readily enable product down sizing.
