New Cat® B-Series Telehandlers Offer Improved Performance, More Versatility and Lower Operating Costs

Caterpillar introduces the TH350B, TH360B and TH460B-the first three models in the new line of Cat B-Series telehandlers. The new models feature improvements throughout to provide increased performance, easier operation, expanded versatility and reduced maintenance. The new models are designed to work productively and cost effectively in a variety of construction, landscaping and agricultural applications.

The TH350B has an operating weight of 18,700 pounds (8480 kilograms) and a rated load capacity of 6,600 pounds (3000 kilograms). Maximum lift height is 36 feet (11 meters), while maximum forward reach is 24 feet (7.4 meters).

The larger TH360B weighs 20,800 pounds (9440 kilograms) and carries a 7,000-pound (3100-kilogram) load. Its maximum lift height is 44.3 feet (13.5 meters) and maximum forward reach is 30 feet (9.2 meters).

The TH460B has an operating weight of 23,100 pounds (10 500 kilograms) and a rated load capacity of 9,000 pounds (4100 kilograms). Maximum lift height is 44.3 feet (13.5 meters), while maximum forward reach is 30 feet (9.2 meters).

System-matched power train
Cat power train components are designed as a total system to optimize performance and life. All three machines are powered by a Cat 3054T diesel engine, rated at 99 gross horsepower (74.5 kilowatts). The engine provides high torque and low emissions. The engine is a proven performer, with excellent fuel efficiency, and reduced sound levels. A new cooling system enhances performance in challenging applications. The cooling fan is driven directly from the engine through the transmission, and as such, does not require an additional hydraulic pump or related lines. Clean air is pulled from outside the machine through the forward-facing, fully-screened cooling pack.

The purpose-designed powersyncro transmission has four speeds forward and three reverse for travel speeds up to 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour). It reaches across the machine, eliminating the need for a separate transfer box. This reduces the number of parts in the system, which decreases maintenance time and operating costs. To further reduce downtime and maintenance costs, the transmission shares hydraulic oil with the work tool hydraulics, decreasing the number of filters on the machines.

The axles and brakes round out the power train system on the new machines and deliver safe, reliable performance. Oil-immersed disc brakes provide four-wheel braking. The braking surface area is 25 percent greater on the B-Series telehanders than on their predecessors. The machines can be equipped with an optional differential lock. An optional self-aligning steering feature is also available. This feature allows the operator to change steering modes with the wheels in any position. The system will actuate the change when the wheels are centered, using axle-mounted sensors.

Comfortable work environment
Operators will appreciate the improved cab on the new machines. Each is telehandler comes equipped with either a canopy or an enclosed cab, which is certified to provide falling object and rollover protection. The cab was engineered with the use of advanced virtual design techniques to ensure good sight lines to the work area. The new control layout is simple and logical, and the electro-hydraulic joystick allows all three boom functions to operate simultaneously for precise load placement in difficult applications. Each model is equipped with a fully adjustable standard suspension seat. An air suspension seat is available as an option. The B-Series telehandlers have a new electronic machine information display to help the operator work safely and productively. Ventilation in the cab is excellent, and air conditioning is available as an option.

Smooth, stable performance
The new machines are productive, maneuverable and responsive. They also offer improved lift height and capacity at reach. A standard rear axle lock engages automatically when the boom is lifted more than 45°, enhancing stability. Newly designed stabilizers offer ±5° of leveling and minimize the bulldozing effect other stabilizers can have. An optional frame leveling system gives ±10° of leveling capability. Three steering modes (two-wheel, crab and circle steer) allow the operator to position the machines easily. The telehandlers feature 48-degree axle turning and no tail swing for productive operation in tight spaces.

Expanded versatility
The B-Series telehandlers are even more versatile than the machines they replace. For maximum flexibility, the machines can be equipped with either a manual or a hydraulic quick coupler. The hydraulic coupler allows the operator to change tools quickly and easily from inside the cab. All A-Series work tools, except for access platforms, are compatible with B-Series machines. New work tools including a material handling arm, a standard carriage, a side-shift carriage and a pick-up broom are available. Other options that extend versatility include a rear tow hitch, additional tire choices, including foam filled tires, and a lighting package for the boom and cab.

Quick maintenance, easy service access
The new telehandlers are designed for fast, easy maintenance and service to increase uptime and drive down operating costs. Daily maintenance has been reduced to checking fluid levels and performing a quick walk-around inspection. Engine oil and filter changes and routine lubrication are now required at 500 hours, rather than 250. The combined hydraulic and transmission filter change interval has been extended to 1,000 hours. All service points are readily accessible, and major components are easy to reach at ground level. The machines can now be diagnosed with the Cat Electronic Technician service tool for faster, more accurate troubleshooting. They can also be equipped with Product Link, a dealer- or factory-installed fleet management tool that uses Global Positioning System technology and the Internet.

Another new option for the B-Series telehandlers is the Caterpillar® Machine Security System for theft deterrence. This is a programmable key system that provides optimum machine security for both fleet users and single owners.
