Telefonica Moviles Espana Select Openwave's Adaptive Messaging Solution

Openwave's Newest Adaptive Messaging Service Addresses Consumer Demand for Richer, Simplified Communication Experience

LOS ANGELES, CTIA IT & ENTERTAINMENT, Sept. 12 // -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Telefonica Moviles Espana, one of the world's leading mobile telecommunications companies, has selected a mobile email service based on Openwave's IP-based Adaptive Messaging platform. With the new messaging service, Telefonica subscribers can receive real-time advanced email alerts from multiple existing email accounts, and fully manage their mailboxes from any mobile phone.

According to Alfonso Perea, Director for Messaging Services at Telefonica Moviles Espana, the next generation of messaging services holds tremendous potential, both from a revenue and innovation perspective. "Our continued market leadership is predicated upon us being able to rapidly offer our customers the most engaging and intuitive communication experiences possible. By teaming with Openwave we are able to offer converged adaptive messaging services that will help us to reduce churn, boost adoption and increase average revenue per user, both now and in the future. Our subscribers gain true benefits from our rich and intuitive mobile messaging service, thus dramatically decreasing their incentive for switching between carriers.

"By selecting Openwave's adaptive messaging solution to implement its mobile email service, Telefonica Moviles benefits from a solution that uses the native client with no additional downloads required. This enables operators to reach the broadest range of handsets in their installed base, offering their subscribers seamless message access from a single inbox regardless of whether the message is in SMS, MMS or email form.

o Converged solution -- receive email notifications and fully manage email via mobile handset or PC

o Intuitive user experience -- Single Inbox for SMS, MMS and email

o Simple to use -- emails and alerts pushed to the user's existing mobile phone with access to messages as easy as making a phone call

o Branded webmail -- email alerts display a Telefonica look and feel

o The ability to listen to email messages using a telephone

o Aggregated message receipt and management for non carrier-owned messages

o Self care interface allows users to set up their personal preferences, like filters for mobile email
