Tapered Roller Bearings feature 4-row design.
Press Release Summary:
Available in open and sealed variants that are identical, both dimensionally and in terms of load-carrying capacity, SKF Explorer Tapered Roller Bearings are intended for work rolls in rolling mills. Compact seal, made with heat- and wear-resistant material, allows unified bearing design. Open bearings have no cage protrusion, minimizing risk of damage both during handling and operation. Four separate outer rings allow even load distribution, extending service life.

SKF to Launch Upgraded Explorer Four-row Tapered Roller Bearings at METEC 2015
New SKF Explorer four-row tapered roller bearing design for work rolls in rolling mills makes open and sealed bearing variants completely interchangeable for greater design freedom and improved performance
Featuring open and sealed variants that are identical, both dimensionally and in terms of load-carrying capacity, upgraded SKF Explorer four-row tapered roller bearings set a new standard for interchangeability, between open and sealed bearings and provide unprecedented freedom to match bearings to work roll application demands.
“Selecting open or sealed bearings for work rolls has often involved some compromise between load carry capacity, reliability and service life,” explains Mr Jacek Hudzikowski, SKF Metals Industry Business Engineer. “Thanks to their new design, upgraded SKF Explorer four-row tapered roller bearings are identical, both dimensionally and in load carrying capacity. This means that steel mills can choose the most suitable option to help boost performance, reliability and cut maintenance costs without compromise.”
The new compact seal allows a unified bearing design resulting in better performance compared to the previous versions. Made with a heat- and wear-resistant material, the seal offers better performance with lower friction, operating temperature and wear. Even the open bearings will have no cage protrusion. This makes handling the bearing much easier whilst reducing the risk of damage both during handling and operation. Designed to provide optimum stress distribution over the roller/raceway contact, SKF Explorer four-row tapered roller bearings can handle higher loads than previous designs. The four separate outer rings also allow better, more even load distribution and, consequently, longer service life.
Due to their spacer-less design, new SKF Explorer four-row tapered roller bearings are also easier to mount and dismount.
METEC is the Metallurgy industry’s largest Exhibition, held once every four years. It takes place at the Trade Fair Center (Messe Dusseldorf) in Dusseldorf, Germany, on 16-20 June, 2015. Visitors to the event will find SKF at Hall 4, E20.
