IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3592 Model C20 Enhances Performance, Capacity, and Attachment Flexibility

At a glance

The new IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3592 Model C20 with the new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A is designed to offer a dramatic improvement in performance, capacity, and attachment flexibility for customers that currently use the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 in a StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS). These enhancements include:

40 MB/sec native data rate versus 14 MB/sec for the 3590 E or H Model

300 GB native cartridge capacity versus 60 GB for the 3590 H Model

Dual ported switched fabric 2-Gbps Fibre Channel attachments

Small form factor that allows up to 20 tape drives in a single frame and up to 80 drives in a single Library Storage Module (LSM)

Intermix of 3592 and other tape technologies in the same ACS

High reliability and availability design

Overview

The new IBM TotalStorage(TM) Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3592 Model C20 with the new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A is designed to offer an improvement in performance, capacity, and attachment flexibility, as compared to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, for customers with an installed StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn Tape Library. The 3592 Model J1A has a data rate of up to 40 MB/sec versus 14 MB/sec for the 3590 E or H Model. It also has a 300 GB native cartridge capacity versus 60 GB for the 3590 H Model. The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive has a dual-ported 2-Gbps Fibre Channel interface Fibre Channel attachment for connection to a switched fabric environment and a broad range of host systems.

Due to the smaller size of the 3592 drive, the new Model C20 Frame will hold up to 20 of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives, which is five times the maximum number of 3590 Tape Drives in the 3590 Model C12 or C14 Frame. The Model C20 Frame also supports n+1 redundant power supplies for the drive and has redundant frame line cords for improved availability.

These advancements in performance, capacity, and footprint can reduce the number of tape drives, cartridges, and Library Storage Modules (LSMs) required, as well as the associated floor space. The 3592 Tape Drive and media can coexist in the same StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS) with other tape technologies, helping to protect a customer's automation investment and easing migration to the new drive.

Key prerequisites

The new 3592 Model J1A in the 3592 Model C20 Frame is attached to a StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn Tape Library on selected Fibre Channel, ESCON®, or FICON(TM) servers. Refer to the Technical information section for details.

Planned availability dates

February 6, 2004: Feature numbers 8802 and 8820

October 31, 2003: All other features

Description

The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A is a follow-on to the highly successful Enterprise Tape Drive 3590. It is designed for high-performance tape applications, including:

High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape.

Large-scale automated tape environments where performance and reliability are required. These are primarily half-inch tape drive environments.

Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. Examples include the seismic industry, supercomputing, data warehousing, and record management applications.

The 3592 Model J1A is the first model of a new family of tape products that are designed to meet the growing needs of both new and existing IBM tape customers across a wide range of environments. Advantages of the new 3592 Model J1A in the 3592 Model C20 Frame include:

Higher performance, which can help reduce the number of tape drives required

Larger capacity, to help you reduce the number of cartridges required and floor space needed

Smaller form factor, which can help reduce the automation footprint

Dual-ported native switched fabric interface, designed to enhance attachment flexibility

High reliability, availability, and serviceability, to help you improve operations

The 3592 Model J1A has a data rate of up to 40 MB/sec versus 14 MB/sec for the 3590 E or H Model. It also has a 300 GB native cartridge capacity versus 60 GB for the 3590 H Model. Due to the smaller size of the 3592 drive, the new Model C20 Frame will hold up to 20 of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives, which is five times the maximum number of 3590 Tape Drives that the 3590 Model C12 or C14 Frame contained. The Model C20 Frame also supports n+1 redundant power supplies for the drive and has redundant line cords for frame power. The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A in the 3592 Model C20 Frame can be attached to a StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn Tape Library. It can coexist with other tape technologies and media in the same ACS. The 3592 media can reside in a StorageTek 9310 PowderHorn or 4410 LSM.
