T-8 Wire handles vertical-up welds at high current levels.

Press Release Summary:

Self-shielded, flux-cored Fabshield® XLR-8 enables out-of-position welding at both high and low heat inputs. It eliminates slag entrapment and resists cracking, while offering stable arc and flat bead profile. With diffusible hydrogen levels of less than 6.7 ml per 100 g of weld deposit, wire can produce X-ray quality welds. It meets D-Designation under AWS A5.20:2005, making it suitable for AWS D1.8 Demand Critical Welds.

Hobart Brothers Creates New Generation of T-8 Wire

New Generation of T-8 Wire from Hobart Brothers Speeds Productivity on Demanding Applications

TROY, Ohio. April 2, 2007-Today, Hobart Brothers introduced a new generation of T-8 wire specifically designed to improve productivity on challenging structural steel erection, heavy equipment repair and ship and barge construction applications. The Hobart® Fabshield® XLR-8 is a self-shielded flux-cored wire featuring the most reliable out-of-position welding capabilities, at both high and low heat inputs, of any wire in its class. It is especially well suited for vertical-up welds at high current levels.

The new wire features lower diffusible hydrogen levels than competitive T-8 wires and meets the new D-Designation under AWS A5.20:2005, making it useable for AWS D1.8 Demand Critical Welds.

Less Rework, Greater Productivity
With productivity-enhancing features, including excellent slag removal, the XLR-8 wire eliminates slag entrapment associated with older generations of T-8 wire and offers high-impact strength at low temperatures to resist cracking and minimize resultant rework.

The XLR-8 wire also offers a stable arc and a flat bead profile with a large voltage window to improve both operator comfort and productivity in out-of-position welding applications.

Low diffusible hydrogen levels-less than 6.7 ml per 100 g of weld deposit-allow the XLR-8 wire to produce X-Ray quality welds with greater crack resistance, making it highly suitable for critical welding applications, while moisture-proof packaging makes it reliable for extended storage.

Compared to other self-shielded flux-cored wires in its class, other important features of the new XLR-8 wire include: higher deposition rates, smoother arc transfer and J classification for Charpy impact values.
