Astec Power Introduces Next Generation, Modular Front End, Bulk Power Sources HPS15 Modules Provide up to 6000 Watts of Bulk Power from a 3U High Rack

CARLSBAD, Calif. - May 15, 2002 - Astec Power, a leading merchant supplier of power conversion solutions, today announced the addition of the HPS15 model to its high efficiency series of bulk-front-end switching power supply line. Weighing in at 6.2 watts per cubic inch, each HPS15 can deliver 1500W of output power at 85% efficiency. A rack of four units can deliver a full 6,000 watts of clean bulk DC power from just a little under 1,500 cubic inches.

The HPS Series addresses the challenging needs of network, telecom, manufacturing and industrial equipment designers, who demand reliable and cost effective power solutions. Modular building blocks will soon be at the core of every new system being designed. The HPS15 features a wide AC input range (108V to 264V AC), with power factor correction (typically 0.98) that meets EN61000-3-2 requirements for input current harmonic content. Each module has over-voltage and overload protection on all outputs, active inrush current limiting circuitry, remote sense capability on the main (bulk) output, and an internal OR-ing device. The units require no minimum load, and each module has a pair of "Input OK" & "Output Good" indicator LEDs, and produces corresponding status signals. Standard features also include a built-in 25W 5V stand-by supply, forced current sharing between modules operating in parallel, and remote programmability (margining) of the main output voltage. Additionally, all HPS modules can be ordered with an optional 60W auxiliary (12 or 24V) output intended for driving fan trays, optional current monitoring capability, and "Failed Fan" signaling capability.

Available in nine different standard output voltages that cover the span of 24 to 60V DC, the HPS family of power supply modules comply with worldwide safety and performance standards and have UL, CSA, CE, IEC, TUV and CB approvals. Designed to meet FCC Class B and CISPR22 Level B conducted and radiated emissions, the HPS modules also meet all industry standard noise and immunity requirements. And all members of the HPS family are hot plug-able, allowing true N+1 redundancy for maximum reliability.

Optional on-board intelligence will allow HPS modules to digitally communicate data ranging from operational status, such as temperature or "in current limit," to module or installation location identification. All HPR racks feature a "smart power" slot that can accommodate various communications formats such as RS232, Ethernet, and I2C.

Available now, OEM pricing starts at $543 per HPS15 module and $215 per basic HPR3 rack.
