Switching DC Power Supply quietly generates up to 1.2 kW.

Press Release Summary:

Offering remote control from RS-232 serial interface, Model VSP2050 features soft switching and 2-device, asynchronous, half-bridge dc to dc converter design. Unit, supplied in 19 in. rack-mount chassis that measures 1U high, provides output of 0-20 Vdc, 0-50 A. While analog remote sensing automatically maintains desired voltage at load level of power cable, manual tuning is enabled via front panel, 10-turn potentiometers and 3-digit meters.

B+K Precision's® Model VSP2050 DC Power Supply Generates Up To 1.2 Kilowatts of Power Without All The Noise

YORBA LINDA, Calif. February 28, 2005 - B&K Precision Corporation, one of the industries' leading suppliers of test and measurement products, today announced the immediate availability of the Model VSP2050, the latest member of its family of high-power, low-noise DC power supplies. The Model VSP5020 High Power Switching DC Power Supply is compatible with most computers via a standard RS-232 serial port. At a price of only $1725.00., the new Model VSP2050 offers as much as 1.2 kilowatts in a 19-inch rackmounted chassis that measures just 1U (1.75 inches) in height, and is ideal for applications ranging from automatic test equipment to R&D labs, to telecommunications.

The Model VSP2050 provides an output of 0 - 20VDC, 0 - 50A and utilizes modern switch mode technology to produce a high-power, low-noise switching supply that costs around 25 percent less than linear supplies with the same power. Among the many outstanding features of the Model VSP2050 DC Power Supply are:

o Precise output voltage control via:
a. Manual tuning utilizing front panel mounted Ten-turn potentiometers and three-digit meters
b. Remote control from an RS-232 Interface
c. Analog remote sensing automatically maintains desired voltage at load level of power cable.

o Provides up to 1.2 kilowatts

oCompact 1U (1.75 inch by 19 inch rack mountable cabinet

o Up to nine units can be cascaded, producing more that 10 Kilowatts of DC power.

o Front-to-back airflow allows full power operation without space between supplies.

Linear power supplies produce a clean DC output-but the downside is lower efficiency and relatively high cost. However, switching supplies that produce the same wattage are more efficient and less expensive, but they also deliver high-frequency noise along with the DC power. B+K Precision's new Model VSP2050DC provides another option.

Behind the performance advantages of the Model VSP2050 are two significant advances in switching techniques. One is soft switching; the other is a two-device asynchronous half-bridge DC to DC converter design.

The soft switching technique is a vital step for reducing switching noise. This technique ensures that the switching action will occur when the voltage across the switching device is at a minimum. By turning the switching device in the converter on and off when there is little voltage across it, the transformer load does not see sharp voltage transients. Eliminating that transient gets rid of much of noise that would otherwise propagate through the high-frequency system the transformer to the output stage. It also helps reduce the noise that would typically feed back to the source. A built-in RFI filter further reduces conducted power line noise emissions, as well as susceptibility, allowing t tie supplies to meet EN55022 Class A standards.

The Model VSP2050 DC Power Supply Further reduces the converter's noise by using a "piggy pack" linear regulator to follow the conversion stage. The total effect is to improve the transient response to the changes in load and to reduce output noise and ripple from the DC converter. Along with controlling output noise, the converter and regulator allow the device to offer precise output voltage control.

Available for immediate delivery, the Model VSP2050 DC Power Supply is priced at $1725.00, and comes with a user instruction manual and B&K Precision Corporation's outstanding one year warranty.
