Micrel Launches Newest 3-Port Switch Solution for Interfacing to 10BaseFL or 100BaseSX Networks

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 24 // -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched the KSZ8893FQL. The IC is the latest member of Micrel's 3-port switch family and is aimed at Fiber ("Home Run") based structural wiring, media converters and Industrial control applications. The IC is currently sampling and is offered in fully compliant RoHS devices. For specific pricing, please contact your local Micrel sales representative.

"The KSZ8893FQL offers customers an integrated LED driver and post amplifier solution, among other key technology features," noted Grahame Cooney, director, Micrel Ethernet group. "Not only is this approach more cost effective, but it gives customers an integrated solution that was not previously available on the market."

The KSZ8893FQL 3-port switch supports all of the 10/100 Ethernet optical standards including 100BaseFX, 100BaseSX and 10BaseFL. The device is particularly well suited for short wavelength optical applications because it provides an integrated optical interface that includes a LED driver and post amplifier. This allows customers the benefit of using short wavelength LED and PIN diodes, key for legacy 10Mbit optical networks where there currently are no viable solutions for integrating a short wavelength network into a core 100 Mbit network. The IC also offers improvements to the switching/MAC feature set over earlier generation 3-port switch products and includes support for four priority queues, queue-based rate limiting and IPV6 support for MLD snooping.

The four-level priority queues enables triple (voice, video, data) or quadruple (voice, video, data, gaming) play services by prioritizing traffic by application. In conjunction with queue-based rate limiting, the solution offers traffic shaping on a per-application basis. This allows, for example, reservation of network bandwidth for critical voice traffic.

The device comes with LinkMD(R), a cable diagnostic package that enables diagnosis of common cabling problems. Rapid diagnosis of cabling conditions, including distance-to-fault information results in reduced customer calls (truck rolls or product returns) and IT service requests. The ICs also offers HP Auto-MDIX, a robust solution for automatic detection and correction for straight-through or crossover cables. In addition, the KSZ8893FQL also includes an embedded OAM (operation, administration and management) messaging capability in the Ethernet flow.
