Switch-Mode Power Supply uses passive PFC technology.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for 1U-height, single-output, medical OEM applications, PAM250 passive PFC-based power supply meets all Class A PFC requirements. Universal 115/230 Vac input is complemented by single 250 W continuous power output with single factory-set 12, 24, or 48 V output range. Measuring 7.0 x 4.0 x 1.5 in., it features protection against overload, overvoltage, reverse voltage, and thermal conditions. Current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy is optional.

Original Press Release:

New Medical-Grade 250W Switch-Mode Power Supply Offers 1U Height Form Factor, Low Cost, High Reliability vs. (Active) PFC Switchers

PAM250 features quick prototype delivery; H.A.L.T. testing ensures design parameters and out-of-the-box operation

SAN MARCOS, CA-September 1, 2004-TAIYO YUDEN (U.S.A.), Inc. introduces the PAM250, the second model in its new PAM Series of affordable, passive PFC-based, switch-mode power supplies for 1U-height single-output medical OEM applications. Like its 150W companion model (PAM150), the PAM250 provides economic benefits to OEMs through use of passive versus active PFC technology. Versus passive PFC, active devices are more complex, less reliable and provide unnecessary functionality at higher cost, the result of the recent de-classification of many Class D end devices to less stringent Class A harmonic distortion standards per EN61000-3-2. The PAM250 switcher not only meets all Class A PFC requirements, but also provides greater reliability and higher MTBF (mean time between failure) through use of fewer components. Also, the relative cost per Watt of a passive PFC switcher like the PAM250 is significantly less than a comparable switch-mode power supply employing active PFC techniques.

The PAM250's universal 115/230VAC input is complemented by a single 250W continuous power output with a single factory-set 12V, 24V or 48V output range. Current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy with no special interconnection requirement is offered as an option, as are remote on/off, and droop or single-wire current sharing with OR-ing diodes. The standard unit provides superb heat dissipation, but may be ordered with an optional fan with its own 12VDC supply. Other standard features include: DC "OK," AC power fail, and protection against overload, overvoltage, reverse voltage and thermal conditions.

Manufactured in the company's ISO9001-certified facilities in North America, the PAM250 is ideal for the full spectrum of low power medical equipment OEM supply needs, and is compliant with appropriate UL, CSA, BAURT and IEC 60601-1 certifications. All PAM series switchers feature quick prototype delivery and Highly Accelerated Life Testing (H.A.L.T.) to verify design parameters and ensure 100% out-of-the-box operation. The switcher physically measures just 7.0" (L) x 4.0" (W) x 1.5" (H) and comes with a two-year warranty.
