Surge Protectors suit high-speed telecom equipment.

Press Release Summary:

While transparent during normal circuit operation, NP0080/NP0120/NP0160 provide circuit protection for DSL chipsets and line drivers during surge and ESD events. Differential capacitance of less than 3 pF across operating voltage range precludes signal distortion on high-speed data line. Current withstand capability is greater than 50 A during 8 x 20 µsec surge event. Also available, NP-MC series offers capacitance of less than 30 pF for 100 A-rated device.

ON Semiconductor Introduces Family of Surge Protection Devices for Next Generation of High Speed Telecom Equipment

New TSPDs provide a superior balance of small size combined with high surge capabilities while maintaining low capacitance and low leakage

PHOENIX, Ariz. - October 6, 2008 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions announces the release of a new family of low capacitance Thyristor Surge Protection Devices (TSPD) designed to protect the next generation of high speed telecom equipment. The new devices provide a superior balance of small size combined with high surge capabilities while maintaining low capacitance and low leakage, an ideal combination for leading edge telecom products.

Available in the space-saving TSOP-5 package, the NP0080, NP0120, and NP0160 low capacitance, low leakage devices protect DSL chipsets and line drivers. Though essentially transparent during normal circuit operation, they provide excellent circuit protection during surge and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) events. Their inherently low differential capacitance of less than 3 picofarad (pF) across the operating voltage range precludes signal distortion on the high speed data line. These NP0xxx TSPDs provide exceptional protection with a current withstand capability of greater than 50 ampere (A) during a 8 x 20 microsecond (uS) surge event. They are typically used as tertiary protection between the DSL isolation transformer and the DSL line driver in both Access and Customer Premise Equipment (CPE).

The new TSPD family from ON Semiconductor also includes the market-leading ultra low capacitance NP-MC series in a cost-effective SMB package. The ultra low capacitance of less than 30 pF for a 100 A rated device offers designers an alternative to Gas Discharge Tubes in a number of high speed applications. Due to their ultra low off-state capacitance, the NP-MC devices offer minimal signal distortion for high speed equipment such as VDSL2+ and T1/E1 circuits. The low nominal off-state capacitance translates into the extremely low differential capacitance offering superb linearity with applied voltage or frequency. They are typically used as secondary protectors on the line-side of the DSL isolation transformer. The NPMC series includes the NP0640SCMCT3G, NP0720SCMCT3G, NP0900SCMCT3G, NP1100SCMCT3G, NP1300SCMCT3G and NP1500SCMCT3G.

Essential for development of reliable access and customer premise equipment such as Internet Protocol Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (IP-DSLAM), home gateways and modems, Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) and other equipment, these TSPDs assist the designer in achieving standards compliance, as well as minimizing any impact in signal quality.

The NP0080, NP0120 and NP0160 are packaged in TSOP-5 and priced at $0.2307 USD per unit in 3,000 unit quantities. The NP-MC series devices are available in the SMB package and priced at $0.2307 USD per unit in 2,500 units quantities.
