Real Time Surface Texture Measurement
SAN DIEGO, CA-November 15, 2005-For some critical applications, the surface texture of the material must meet exacting standards to satisfy the requirements for their intended use. For example, coated material for bearing surfaces must meet a precise standard for smoothness. The processes used to manufacture these materials need fine adjustments in order to achieve and maintain just the right degree of surface roughness. In the past, the need to make adjustments was determined by manual measurements using offline tools. The measurement process was tedious and time-consuming, slowing production and wasting material.
The Web Ranger surface inspection system manufactured by Wintriss Engineering can make fine measurements of surface texture in real time eliminating the need to make manual measurements offline. Using a patented optical technique, the Web Ranger Formation Analysis capability can monitor subtle variations of less than 10 microns in surface texture and report the results in text and graphic form to the process control operator. The system can generate a visual or audio alarm if tolerances are exceeded so that the operator can take remedial action immediately.
