Summit Delivers Enterprise-Class Wireless LAN Security and Management to Vertical-Market Devices

Strategic partnerships with Devicescape and Wavelink bring enterprise-class security and management to Summit's 10G Family of Wi-Fi radio modules that are integrated in application-specific devices (ASDs) such as portable data terminals and medical devices. Now IT administrators can safeguard and manage their business-critical ASDs from a central point of control, using proven policies and familiar tools. To deliver the strongest interoperable wireless LAN security available, Summit fully integrates the Secure Wireless Client from Devicescape into Summit radio software. Summit partners with Wavelink to ensure that Wavelink Avalanche and Avalanche Mobility Center can configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage 10G modules and the ASDs that use them.

Akron, Ohio June 29, 2006 -- Summit Data Communications, Inc. today announced strategic partnerships that bring enterprise-class security and management to its 10G Family of high-performance IEEE 802.11g-compliant Compact Flash and PCMCIA client adapters. These radio modules are designed for integration in application-specific devices (ASDs) such as portable data terminals and medical devices. Now IT administrators can safeguard and manage their business-critical ASDs from a central point of control, using proven policies and familiar tools.

To deliver the strongest interoperable wireless LAN security available, Summit fully integrates the Secure Wireless Client (SWC) from Devicescape Software, Inc. into the Summit Client Utility (SCU), a management and monitoring utility that's provided with every 10G module. To enable centralized management of Summit-powered ASDs, Summit partners with Wavelink Corporation to ensure that Wavelink Avalanche and Avalanche Mobility Center can configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage 10G modules and the ASDs that use them.

Robust, Interoperable Security
Increasingly, ASDs transmit sensitive data, such as inventory data and patient information, over the air that separates the mobile device from the network. To protect the data as well as the mobile devices and network infrastructure that transmit and receive the data, enterprise IT departments increasingly are imposing corporate security standards across all wireless LAN client devices. Summit's integrated approach to security simplifies the task of enforcing corporate security policies on ASDs. With SWC integrated in Summit software, Summit's 10G modules provide the highest level of interoperable security available, including support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA2 (IEEE 802.11i).

A full-featured IEEE 802.1X supplicant, SWC is pre-certified for the IEEE 802.11, Wi-Fi Alliance, and Cisco Compatible Extensions specifications. The Wi-Fi Alliance relies on SWC for certification of vendor equipment for Wi-Fi security standards compliance. With SWC integrated, Summit products support mutual authentication using 802.1X and data privacy through encryption and decryption of all transmitted data using WEP, WPA TKIP, or WPA2 AES. 802.1X authentication can use pre-shared keys or Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) types such as EAP-TLS, PEAP-MSCHAP, PEAP-GTC, LEAP, and EAP-FAST.

"Service-enabled devices in an enterprise allow for easy access and sharing of business-critical information anywhere it is needed," said Glenn Flinchbaugh, vice president of marketing for Devicescape. "By selecting Devicescape for its new wireless LAN client adapters, Summit has the proven security and reliability it needs to offer new wireless capabilities to its customers while simultaneously ensuring their valuable data assets are protected."

Avalanche-Ready
SCU gives users and administrators a graphical user interface for viewing and configuring radio and security settings, monitoring the radio's activities, and troubleshoot issues. For large-scale deployments, administrators often prefer to manage mobile devices and their wireless LAN radios through a centralized administration tool such as Avalanche from Wavelink.

Summit radios are Avalanche-Ready Certified. This means that, with the simple installation of Avalanche Enabler software on a client device with a Summit radio module, an administrator can use the full feature set of Avalanche and its plug-ins to manage and secure the devices, without ever having to touch the device. Avalanche can be used in place of SCU, or SCU capabilities can complement Avalanche.

"Wavelink Avalanche is proven software for centralized management of mobile devices," said Steve Bemis, Director of Business Development at Wavelink. "With Avalanche, an administrator can perform rapid, hands-off updates and monitoring of wireless devices located anywhere in the enterprise. Centralized management with Avalanche is much more cost-effective than the traditional, labor-intensive methods of mobile equipment management. Now, the broad range of mobile devices managed by Avalanche includes those devices with wireless LAN radios from Summit, because Summit radios are certified as Avalanche-ready."
