Teradata Extreme Data Appliance Dramatically Impacts How Companies Analyze Archival Data

Teradata packs scalability and performance into next generation archival appliance

SAN DIEGO - Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) today introduced the Teradata Extreme Data Appliance 1600, offering companies a complete, integrated appliance capable of the deep analysis of archival data four times faster than the previous generation. To meet the growing demand for deep analysis of massive data volumes, the Teradata Extreme Data Appliance scales from 29 terabytes up to more than 50 petabytes of data.

"With the release of the second-generation Teradata Extreme Data Appliance, Teradata is addressing the emerging archival analytics need of customers who demand timely, easy access to large volumes of historical data that are typically offloaded to tape storage and archived," said Scott Gnau, chief development officer, Teradata Corporation. "Teradata makes it cost effective and technically possible for its customers to dive deeply into data that was traditionally archived. They can perform real time analytics that result in the discovery of meaningful historical trends and golden nuggets of intelligence, which were unaffordable in the past."

Many Teradata customers, in a mix of industries, have begun to delve into massive volumes of historical detailed data, as these customer examples demonstrate.

- Telecommunications - Teradata customers are collecting massive volumes
of Call Detail Records (CDRs) or data about consumer cell phone usage,
to enable them to perform a quality assessment of network, cell tower
and handset performance. However, due to the massive volume of data,
it is often kept for only weeks or months before being off-loaded to
archival storage. Carriers can now cost effectively store and analyze
years of history to fulfill legal compliance requirements and
simultaneously gain valuable insights into network performance and
customer experience.

- Retailers - With Teradata, retailers are able to meet sales tax
compliance reporting and auditing requirements by analyzing millions
of transactions, which occurred over several years and involved
thousands of products, across thousands of stores. By executing this
detailed analysis in hours or a few days, not weeks and months,
retailers can ensure that they are properly paying their taxes, which
saves time, reduces labor costs, and avoids penalties and fines.

- Finance - A financial services customer stores 14 years of historical
consumer banking data to enable easy access for archival analytics and
governmental compliance.

- Manufacturing - A manufacturer performs quality assurance analyses on
product production data to ensure plant efficiency and fault-free
products. The information is available if issues arise in the first
month of product introduction or the 35th month.

- Online business - Online businesses use Teradata to analyze large
volumes of click- stream data cost effectively. The use of business
intelligence improves target marketing, enhances customer service and
lowers website abandonment rates.
