STMicroelectronics Confirms iDP-LVDS 'Bridge Chips' Support Cinema Mode Format

Robust Internal DisplayPort (iDP(TM)) interface enables extended TV formats

Geneva - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a leader in chips for set-top boxes and digital TVs and one of the supporters and developers of the Displayport and iDP (Internal DisplayPort) standard, today announced it has demonstrated to key customers that its iDP-LVDS 'bridge chips,' the STiDP888 and STi880, fully support the Cinema Mode display standard.

iDP's design flexibility allows the extension of the nominal value from 3.24 Gbps to 3.78 Gbps to support 120Hz Cinema Mode displays (2520x1080, 12bit/color). The iDP standard once again has demonstrated its technical merits and leading position as the preferred interface to replace LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) link.

The VESA iDP standard addresses the connection between a TV controller SoC (System-on-Chip) and a TV panel Timing Controller (TCON) within a TV chassis. It reduces cost and manufacturing complexity compared to LVDS. This open, scalable and royalty-free standard will create a healthy competitive environment with component suppliers, further enhancing cost benefits while driving innovation within the consumer electronics industry.

Further information on the STiDP888 and STiDP880
ST's STiDP888 and STiDP880 is the industry's first internal DisplayPort (iDP) to high-speed Dual LVDS/Quad LVDS converter chipset compliant with the VESA iDP standard.

This chipset implements a single link internal DisplayPort interface comprising four Main Link lanes and Hot Plug Detect, which operates without a sideband channel. This device supports the standard iDP link rate of 3.24 Gbps per lane (12.96 Gbps over 4 lanes) and extended 3.78 Gbps rate per lane (with a total link bandwidth of 15.12 Gbps over 4 lanes), allowing interface connectivity for a wide range of panels up to Full HD and Cinema Mode format (120Hz and 12 bits per color).

The advanced pre-emphasis and equalizer built into these devices offers robust performance over FFC and UTP type cables. The STiDP888/0 are in mass production and are available in 12x12mm 164-ball LFBGA packages.
