Sipex Introduces New 8A Addition to PowerBlox Family

SP7655 is the second in a series of high efficiency, high current, high voltage step down buck regulators.

(Milpitas, CA - August 17, 2004) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading supplier of high performance, analog integrated circuits (ICs), today announced the SP7655. The SP7655 expands Sipex's new PowerBlox(TM) family of high current, high voltage, ultra-miniature DC/DC buck regulators. The part is packaged in a custom DFN package with three integrated heat sinks for outstanding thermal management. This unique packaging technology produces the industry's smallest 8A component, measuring a mere 7mm x 4mm.

The SP7655 is a 300kHz, 8A step-down regulator capable of handling up to 28V input and delivering output voltages as low as 0.8V. By integrating the highest efficiency switches with a resistance of only 15mOhm, the SP7655 outperforms all competing solutions with over 95% efficiency. Other device features include programmable soft start, over-temperature protection, dual under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) thresholds and short circuit protection. Due to its wide input voltage range of 2.5V - 28V, the SP7655 can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as PC motherboards, storage area networks (SAN), plasma TVs, bar code scanners, routers and VGA cards.

"The SP7655 has the highest current sourcing capability of our PowerBlox family," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Sipex. "The advantage of this part is that it achieves impressive 8A delivery and 95% efficiency from a 7mm x 4mm footprint. Over the coming weeks, Sipex will be filling in its PowerBlox portfolio with cost effective lighter load solutions as well as higher switching speed solutions that reduce the size of external components."

Pricing and Availability
Samples of the SP7655 are available now. Pricing for the SP7655 begins at $3.50 in 10,000 piece quantities. The part is rated over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is housed in a 7mm x 4mm DFN package with three independent heat sinks.
