4MHz Synchronous Step-Down Regulator Delivers 4A with Tracking in Less than 300mm²

MILPITAS, CA - April 22, 2004 - Linear Technology Corporation announces the LTC3416, a 95% efficient synchronous buck regulator, which uses a constant frequency, current mode architecture. The LTC3416 also offers voltage tracking for easy supply sequencing. It can deliver up to 4A of continuous output current at voltages as low as 0.8V from a thermally enhanced TSSOP-20 package. It operates from an input voltage of 2.25V to 5.5V, making it ideal for both single cell Li-Ion, or NiMH applications, as well as more general purpose fixed rail systems. Its switching frequency is programmable from 300kHz to 4MHz via a single resistor, ensuring optimal efficiency and allowing the use of tiny low cost capacitors and inductors with less than 1.5mm profile. Constant frequency operation also keeps switching noise out of critical wireless and xDSL frequency ranges, making it ideal for xDSL modem, cellular basestation and automotive applications.

The LTC3416 uses internal switches with an RDS(ON) of only 0.067 Ohms to deliver efficiencies as high as 95%. It also utilizes low dropout 100% duty cycle operation to allow output voltages up to VIN. The LTC3416 operates in forced continuous mode and provides tracking of another power supply rail, yet minimizes no load quiescent current to only 300uA, and less than1uA in shutdown. Furthermore, forced continuous operation reduces noise and RF interference while providing excellent transient response. Fault protection is provided by an overcurrent comparator and adjustable loop compensation allows the transient response to be optimized over a wide range of loads and output capacitance.

The LTC3416 is available from stock in a 20-lead, thermally enhanced TSSOP package. Pricing starts at $5.20 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
