Pulse Expands SmartER Series of xDSL Low-Pass, High-Density Splitter/Filter Modules, Suitable with VDSL2 Applications

Covers ETSI 600 ohms and ETSI option B and BT SIN-346 complex impedances for VDSL2

San Diego, Calif. - April 25, 2007 - Pulse, a Technitrol Company (NYSE: TNL), a worldwide leader in electronic component and subassembly design and manufacturing, has expanded its SmartER(TM) series of xDSL, high-density, low-pass splitter/filter modules suitable with very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL2) applications. Though designed for VDSL2, the modules can also be used in ADSL and ADSL2+ applications. The new B8841NL complies with the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) 600 ohms real impedance standard, and the B8846NL meets the ETSI option B and BT (British Telecom) SIN-346 complex impedances. Combining two standards in one module allows the B8846NL to replace two SMART modules, the B8048E and the B8546E, with one. The modules separate voice and data in xDSL applications.

The B8841NL and B8846NL modules are 17 millimeters x 13 millimeters (mm) which is one-third the size of standard SMART modules, saving valuable board space. Because they can carry frequencies up to 30 megahertz, rather than the 2.2 megahertz for SMART modules, they can be used for the latest broadband wireline standard VDSL2 to provide triple play (voice, video, data) services such as high-definition television (HDTV) and interactive gaming. Pulse's low-pass splitter/filter modules are constructed without a housing and use fewer inductors than were required by the SMART modules to achieve the same functions, making them more cost-effective.

The modules can be mounted on central office (CO) DSLAM splitter boards or customer premise equipment (CPE) as single-line low-pass filter solutions. At telcos they maximize data transmission quality by filtering out interference while achieving excellent voice quality by separating data from voice signals. Their small size provides a flexible architecture because CO system integrators can either use a smaller splitter board or add more lines to a splitter board, while CPE designers can fit more functions on a smaller home gateway. Reduced board space also means that VDSL2 cabinets can be installed closer to a tenant, reducing the operator's expenses.

The SmartER series currently includes three part numbers that cover 4 ETSI and BT standards. Pulse will continue to expand the series throughout the year until modules are available to meet all applicable xDSL standards worldwide.

Modules in the SmartER series are RoHS-6 compliant. The splitter/filter modules are pin-to-pin compatible, so the same board layout can accommodate different standards for different countries just by changing the component model. They are also turnkey -- fully tested with ready-to-use electrical modules, meaning system integrators need only add the mechanical functions to the splitter board.

Pulse's SmartER series splitter/filter modules are available in trays. Pricing in the US begins at $2.95 per module and varies depending on order configuration and destination. Detailed specifications are available on data sheet B898 for the B8841NL at: pulseeng.com/products/dataSheets/B898.pdf and B899 for the B8846NL at: pulseeng.com/products/dataSheets/B899.pdf on the Pulse Web site.
