SPARC® OpenGL® Support on ATI Radeon(TM) 9250 Released by Xi Graphics

Delivers High-performance 3D on Workstations With Desktop Graphics Card

DENVER, June 27 -- Xi Graphics, Inc. announced that its extensive Accelerated-X(TM) Summit Series product line of X Window System ("X") graphics sub-system software packages now has 2D and OpenGL 3D support for the ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card on SPARC computer platforms from Sun Microsystems.

Accelerated-X for ATI 9250 on SPARC utilizes the Intel bios on the standard ATI Radeon 9250 and can operate with or without an incumbent graphics card with an Open Boot bios.

The new Xi Graphics X server/driver offering is high-performance, high-quality commercial software that is compliant with industry standard specifications for X (through X11R6.5) and for OpenGL (through v1.5).

Features available in the new Summit DX Series for SPARC include hardware acceleration for both 2D and OpenGL operations on all monitors, DualView capabilities (logical screen across two monitors, or an xscreen per monitor, or same view on both monitors, or a portion of one view zoomed on the second monitor), and an easy to use graphical configuration utility. Probably the most important feature is the speed and stability of the X server and associated graphics driver software, a hallmark of Xi Graphics' Accelerated-X brand of X servers and graphics drivers for over ten years.

"By designing the X servers and graphics drivers from the ground up rather than just tweaking the 'Sample Implementation' open source provided by The Open Group, Xi Graphics has earned a reputation for the fastest and most stable X sub-system graphics software in the industry," according to Xi Graphics' Bill Davis. "Our OpenGL rendering pipeline is also highly optimized and utilizes hardware acceleration to the fullest extent of the graphics hardware," he continued. If existing OpenGL application source code was compiled against the Sun Microsystems' OpenGL library with Sun's "optimizing" option on, the code will need to be recompiled with that option off, Davis explained. The Sun "optimizations" produce binary code that will only run on Sun's libGL, and such "optimizations" are not necessary with Accelerated-X OpenGL to obtain high OpenGL performance.

A demo package of the new SPARC 9250 package is available for free download and testing. Users can purchase a Summit License Key on-line which, when installed, converts a demo into permanent product. A license is required for each computer on which an Accelerated-X Summit graphics driver software is installed in non-demo mode.
