New Drop-In Oxygenation System Bolsters Fish Health

Linde Technology Supports Intensive Aquaculture Globally

Seafood Expo, booth #2074 - For the first time at Seafood Expo North America in Boston, March 19-21, booth #2074, Linde LLC will feature a proprietary drop-in oxygenation system designed for easy handling and operation for intensive aquaculture. The new SOLVOX® DropIn system offers a simple solution for seawater species grown in sea cages, which are used throughout South America.

The oxygenation system is part of a family of SOLVOX pure oxygen-injection and diffusion systems that promote fish health throughout the growth cycle, and can boost dissolved oxygen levels much more efficiently than aeration systems, which require energy-intensive compressors.

The innovative drop-in oxygenation system (patent-pending) is ideal for high-value export species such as salmon, sea bass, sea bream, and arctic char. The SOLVOX DropIn oxygenation system contains a patented oxygen dissolver and distribution system featuring a specially designed venturi nozzle.

After the unit is lowered to the desired depth, water is drawn in from below and mixed with oxygen. Oxygenated water is then distributed throughout the sea cage through the nozzles at the top of the unit. The system creates slow-rising microbubbles which extends oxygen residence time. This, combined with the high surface-to-volume ratio of the rising bubbles, increases oxygen dissolution efficiency even at low pressures.

Aquaculture Bubbles Up

Erik Fihlman, Program Manager for Seafood & Prepared Foods, Linde LLC, notes aquaculture is developing in the U.S. and the pace may accelerate. "U.S. players are expanding and considering integrating operations to take advantage of opportunities in the prepared seafood segment," he said. "The SOLVOX DropIn system is just one way Linde makes it easy to boost production."

Linde, a global leader in oxygenation systems for aquaculture is contributing to the success of fish farms around the globe from South America to Norway where it develops oxygenation technology at the world-class Linde Innovation Center for aquaculture.

"In South America, aquaculture is a bright spot especially for the economies of Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Peru and Brazil as they expand their seafood exports to Asia, Europe, and the U.S.," says Mark DiMaggio, Head of Food and Beverage, Linde Americas. "We design SOLVOX oxygenation systems for every stage of the life cycle, from hatchery through primary and secondary growth cycles – and then on to shipment including systems for live transport," he said.

Linde offers complete oxygen supply and distribution systems, matched to the scale of the fish farm operation, the fish species and the production cycle. Engineering an oxygenation system involves a range of factors that must be taken into consideration by an industry expert to maximize productivity.

Linde LLC supports the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and the advancement of food safety. Linde has a Food Safety Management System in place for all bulk carbon dioxide (CO2) plants and air separation facilities supplying the food & beverage industry in North America. In June 2012, Linde became the first supplier to certify all of its CO2 plants to a benchmarked GFSI scheme, FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification).

The Linde food team performs on-site assessments and works with fish farms and seafood processors to develop optimal solutions. For more information visit Linde ( at Seafood Expo booth #2074, or call: 800-755-9277.
