Solderless Component Assemblies Provide Complete Design/Production Interconnect Solution for Portable Device OEMs
North Attleboro, MA, July 2003 - Tyco Electronics offers its Elastomeric Technologies(TM) solderless component assemblies utilizing the company's unique STAX(TM) elastomeric surface-to-surface silicone rubber compression connectors to provide a complete solderless interconnect assembly for high-volume portable device OEMs. Solutions are available for condenser microphones, speakers and vibration motors. The solution minimizes the space on the main PC board to a pair of contact pads and eliminates the need to solder a complete assembly.
These solderless component assemblies are comprised of the electronic component (a microphone, a vibratory motor, or a speaker), a rubber boot, and an elastomeric connector. The OEM need not be bothered with sourcing a microphone, boot and connector separately. The rubber boot holds and aligns the electronic component to the elastomer while enabling the assembly to fit compressively into the front-cover housing of a portable device (cell phone, PDA, etc.). The boot also provides the critical functions of a gasket seal to the environment and an acoustic seal. The assembly is sturdily built to eliminate costly packaging methods and possible damage, and the surface conformity of the silicone rubber protects against fretting corrosion and eliminates concern over co-planarity tolerances and the resulting soldering strength of mechanical connectors.
No assembly is required. All the OEM need do is to snap it in place. No special tools are necessary, and the assembly is easily re-mateable / de-mateable. Component-to-board height is as low as 0.50 mm, with a range of deflection to ensure reliable electrical interconnects throughout most standard industry tolerances.
