Agilent Technologies Speeds RF/Microwave Circuit Design with Industry-First Automated, Accurate Passive Component Modeling Technology

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 28, 2003 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the industry's first automated technology that provides accurate, fast passive component models to help speed the design of RF and microwave circuits used in cellular phones, wireless and broadband networks, and radar and satellite communications systems. The Agilent Advanced Model Composer is available with Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS) 2003A electronic design automation (EDA) software suite.

"Advanced Model Composer is the first tool to enable the automated creation of passive models with electromagnetic effects already built in," said Joe Civello, ADS product manager for Agilent EEsof EDA. "With the guesswork removed from passive component optimization and tuning early in the design cycle, designers save valuable time and can turn their talents and attention to design innovation, rather than late-cycle electromagnetic verification."

Prior to the Advanced Model Composer, engineers performing design simulations relied on pre-built, standard analytical models, or on a time-consuming manual process for creating custom models. The Advanced Model Composer automatically generates, with minimal effort, electromagnetically accurate models that are customized to the target frequencies and process properties of specific designs. In addition, the passive component models, which include spiral inductors, MIM (metal-insulator-metal) capacitors and transmission-line matching elements, run at speeds comparable to those of fast analytical models. The models can be used internally or shared with customers to achieve consistent design accuracy earlier in the design flow.

Advanced Model Composer features new adaptive modeling algorithms that are based on Agilent's patented Multidimensional Adaptive Parameter Sampling (MAPS) technique. MAPS allows users to build a global fitting, compact model of user-defined parameters. The resulting models are effective for design optimization and tuning because they enable fast simulation of circuits within set parameter and frequency requirements.
