FireDaemon 1.8: Run Any Application or Script as a Windows Service

A Popular Service Management Utility Provides Maximum Uptime for Particular Applications and Secures Them against Accidental Crashes or Intentional Shutdowns

Sydney, NSW, Australia - October 10, 2005: Sublime Solutions today announces the release of FireDaemon, the newest version of the popular service management utility. FireDaemon allows you to install and run any 32-bit/64-bit application or script as a service under Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. The application enables complete configuration of the installed services, including such options as a service name, application default directory, run as system or domain account, automatic startup and process prioritisation. Configuration options can be setup via the graphical user interface or command line, using XML configuration files.

Why Install an Application as a Service?
According to James Bourne, CEO of Sublime Solutions and co-author of FireDaemon, the idea behind FireDaemon is to provide maximum uptime for particular applications and secure them against accidental crashes or intentional shutdowns. "Installing an application as a service gives you a number of benefits. For example, a program setup as a service runs in the background all the time, regardless of who is or is not logged in. This is useful for certain programs, such as network management or business
productivity software, that you would like to be running all the time. Besides, as a service, the program can be configured to run for specific periods during the day, week or month. This leads to better, more "targeted" systems management."

Additions and Enhancement in Version 1.8
The new version of FireDaemon continues to deliver all much-requested features. Additionally, it introduces a handful of enhancements and new extras. The installer enables all customers of FireDaemon 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 to upgrade to version 1.8. The upgrade is seamless and free. As the installer has been completely rebuilt, now it is 2.7 Mb smaller than in earlier releases. This allows spending less time on downloading the program. The FireDaemon uninstaller optionally stops/uninstalls FireDaemon services. All executables and DLLs have been digitally signed.

The user interface has been enhanced to improve its visual perception and convenience. The old toolbar icons have been replaced with the new ones, which are simpler and more intuitive. Also, synchronization issues, which resulted from using FireDaemon via the user interface and command line simultaneously, have been fixed. The program has become even handier now that it has the ability to drag and drop FireDaemon configurations to/from the GUI and the desktop. Added to this is the ability to select multiple services to start, stop or delete.

Version 1.8 has been designated "Windows Compatible" on 32-bit and 64-bit systems by Microsoft. It supports system and service specific environment variables on all platforms. Also it has a support for mapped drives and UNC paths. Customers will discover an improved scheduling facility and a new Dialogs tab, which enables dialog popup control. With 1.8 console applications shutdown gracefully. Services can be stopped or started via direct registry modification. These and other features of version 1.8 are listed on the FireDaemon website.
