ABAQUS(r) Version 6.4 Extends Leadership in Finite Element Analysis

Market demands for solution speed, engineering productivity, and accurate simulation of advanced problems define the focus for Version 6.4

PAWTUCKET, R.I., October 14, 2003 - ABAQUS, Inc., the leading provider of software for advanced finite element analysis (FEA), today announced that Version 6.4 of its ABAQUS(r) product suite will begin shipping to customers this month.

Engineering organizations worldwide use ABAQUS software for linear and nonlinear analysis, finite element modeling, and results visualization to predict how products and material processes will behave in the real world. Version 6.4 of ABAQUS offers major gains in FEA performance, ease of use, and mechanics technology. With this new release, ABAQUS continues its strong commitment to supporting companies that consider FEA fundamental to differentiation and innovation, and ultimately to competitive advantage.

"Our customers demand sophisticated and flexible tools for analysis," says Ken Short, vice president of marketing for ABAQUS, Inc., "and they expect our software to meet the highest standards for performance, usability, and mechanics technology. Version 6.4 of ABAQUS is a significant release in all three respects. It includes more than 90 major enhancements and reflects our continuing significant investment in FEA research and development."

"Customer insights and requests are always the foundation for new releases of our software," says Bruce Engelmann, chief technology officer for ABAQUS, Inc. "We know analysis speed and accuracy are vital for engineering organizations in competitive industries, so advancement in software performance is central to ABAQUS research and development."

Solution Speed

The need to address increasingly larger and more complex simulations using FEA continues to grow at a rapid pace across various industries. Accordingly, providing best-in-class software performance is a strategic priority for ABAQUS. On many large simulations, such as powertrain analysis or cell phone drop simulation, Version 6.4 offers more than double the throughput over previous versions of ABAQUS. Gains in solution speed directly shorten analysis turnaround time, helping engineering organizations meet ambitious goals for innovation, cost reduction, and product quality.

The direct sparse solver in ABAQUS/Standard, unmatched in robustness, now includes dynamic load balancing, which substantially extends its parallel performance, with effective scalability achievable on 16 processors or more. Version 6.4 also introduces a new parallel domain decomposition iterative solver, which can be used as a companion to the direct solver to increase solution speed on certain classes of problems. Parallel performance of ABAQUS/Explicit has also been strengthened in a number of areas, including general contact and parallelization based on Message Passing Interface (MPI).

Engineering Productivity

Version 6.4 establishes ABAQUS/CAE as a compelling solution for desktop modeling and results visualization. A more intuitive and streamlined user interface is now available as a Windows-native application. In addition, ABAQUS/CAE offers significantly improved graphics speed, enabling more efficient post-processing of very large analyses. Considerable advances have also been made to geometry import, meshing, and interactive diagnostics for understanding and trouble-shooting complex simulations.

Version 6.4 also presents the first general release of the ABAQUS GUI Toolkit that, together with the ABAQUS Scripting Interface, constitute the ABAQUS Process Automation toolset. This toolset enables ABAQUS customers to capture proven workflows and methods for deployment to a wider audience via customized interfaces or non-proprietary applications such as Internet browsers.

Accurate Simulation of Advanced Problems

ABAQUS continues to lead the FEA industry with the development of advanced mechanics technology, including new elements, materials, and solution procedures in Version 6.4. In particular, Version 6.4 offers a breakthrough approach to brake squeal analysis that combines well-known ABAQUS strengths, such as the modeling of contact and other nonlinear effects, with newly implemented complex eigenvalue extraction, all in one seamless procedure.

"Brake squeal has been a high warranty problem in the automotive industry for decades," states S-W Kung, Senior Analytical Engineer at Delphi Corporation, in a recent SAE paper. "The new complex eigensolver in ABAQUS version 6.4 has provided the automotive brake industry a seamless way of performing noise analysis. The effect of friction coupling no longer needs to be manually imposed to the system matrix using user defined subroutines or the direct matrix input. Contact conditions and other nonlinear effects from the pre-loading are also taken into account to formulate the base state for the complex eigensolution."

Another notable advance in structural mechanics technology is the new "continuum-shell" element, possessing the topology of a solid element to provide accurate solutions for applications having the simultaneous interactions of both contact and bending. Version 6.4 also offers a "Mullins Effect" material model, for improved hyperelastic analysis, as well as a new procedure for high temperature fatigue applications, which shortens the time to arrive at the steady-state response to cyclic loading.
