Expway Launches Turnkey FastESG(TM), Seamless Electronic Service Guide for Mobile TV

EXPWAY of France has designed and launched FastESG(TM), an end-to-end Electronic Service Guide as a solution for mobile and broadcast networks from server to terminal. FastESG(TM) is an XML-based software solution, built on rich metadata language such as DVB-CBMS, which guarantees an enhanced end-user experience particularly in the field of TV viewing and multimedia entertainment. The company showcased its technology at the IFA trade show in Berlin and at the IBC in Amsterdam in early September 2005.

The Electronic Service Guide (ESG) is the main component of any DVB-H system, which facilitates access to services and ensures that they are utilized. The ESG service is central to promoting content and services to end-users and to drive them to view, order, and consume content that is relevant to them.

This solution is fully flexible and customizable to ensure an efficient, seamless presentation for the user. Operators and service providers can construct their ESG over a large range of fields for describing TV, ring-tones, pictures, or java games. This broad set of information allows service providers to implement several usage models to better promote and access their services.

The ESG must be efficient enough so that consumers can have constant access to it and are attracted by what it can offer them. Added-value services are available for further customization, allowing the user to sign up for real-time alerts to his or her mobile phone, for example. Its Metadata Converter, which converts the metadata from SI to XML, allows real-time updates with an existing digital television stream regardless of the user's network.

FastESG(TM) conforms to key mobile and TV standards defined by groups such as DVB-CBMS, DVB-IPI, TV-Anytime, W3C, and MPEG. This avoids the drawback, for the user, of being locked within a costly and stagnant proprietary solution. The FastESG(TM) Metadata Importer is compatible with the DVB-IPI standard for the transmission of EPG in a broadband environment, therefore a telecoms operator can bridge its mobile and DSL services.

It can manage several different networks and a variety of devices in a seamless manner. It supports several distribution models such as pull-only through GPRS, EDGE, or UMTS (unicast) modes, push-only through DVB-H/DMB (multicast) modes, and hybrid (mixed) mode. Its efficiency is also due to compression and transport technologies, allowing a minimum number of bursts to be used for downloading ESG information. FastESG(TM) also saves memory, CPU, and battery life.

Built using standard Java and database technology on the server side, it allows an easy and fast deployment. Pure ANSI C and Java J2ME are used on the client side for efficiency and portability. Several wrappers are provided to be integrated into different browsers or players, such as an HTML browser or a SVG player.

FastESG(TM) is available in a range of formats: FastESG(TM) for Service Providers, FastESG(TM) for Telecom Operators, FastESG(TM) for Broadcasters, and FastESG(TM) for Manufacturers.
