Openwave Introduces Email Mx 6

Enhancements Help Operators Compete, Safeguards Messages and Lower Operational Costs

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - April 29, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the mobile communications industry today announced Openwave Email Mx Version 6.0 (Mx 6), the next generation email and messaging platform that gives service providers the ability to offer and support new messaging services to meet the demands of today's subscribers. Mx 6 delivers a complete anti-abuse solution and a new web mail interface that offers a superior end user experience. Performance and manageability enhancements significantly drive down total cost of ownership while extending Openwave's lead in carrier-class quality and reliability. The Openwave Mx 6 Extensions technology provides interfaces into message processing to give an operator the ability to efficiently and cost effectively develop new services or integrate value added third party applications such as anti-virus, anti-spam or lawful mail interceptions (CALEA).

This new release of Openwave Mx 6 forms the foundation of the Mx Messaging Platform. With over 147 million mailboxes utilized for email, mobile email, business messaging, voicemail, photo
messaging, and MMS, Mx is a true messaging platform for multiple service creation. Built on a complete, highly scalable, IP infrastructure, the Mx Messaging Platform permits carriers to easily leverage their investment to extend beyond email into new messaging, either via a complete solution from Openwave or integration with third-party messaging applications.

"Mx 6 reflects Openwave's commitment to offering superior carrier-class messaging solutions that help providers reduce operational costs and increase the value of their service offering," said John Yuzdepski, vice president and general manager, messaging group for Openwave. "Enhancements such as the web mail interface and a multi-level anti-abuse solution provide operators with the ability to differentiate their services, strengthen their brand and offer end-users the high quality experience they have come to expect."

"Issues such as spam increase churn and create customer dissatisfaction which can have tremendous negative financial impact and damage an operator's brand. It's critical that operators invest in a comprehensive messaging solution that addresses these issues," said Mark Winther, Group VP of Telecommunications at IDC. "An optimal solution, such as Openwave MX, is one that addresses quality issues, but reduces the total cost of ownership and provides a platform to enable
operators to take advantage of future messaging opportunities."

Openwave and IBM have provided a joint email carrier-class solution for over a year with the IBM AIX version of Openwave Email Mx messaging solution. Under the agreement Openwave and IBM
announced last year, Email MX also runs on DB2 and Shark Storage, and IBM Global Services will continue to provide consulting, systems integration and professional services tailored to the needs of joint customers.

Mx 6 Key Features

Enhanced User Interface

Email Mx combines a full-featured address book, family mailbox/head of household administration, Enhanced Parental Controls, brandable and customizable Web pages that together contribute to increased CSP brand awareness and subscriber retention. In addition, many of the features of the service can be provisioned and configured by end-users, lowering help desk call volume and associated operational costs.

Email Mx equips CSPs with comprehensive anti-spam and anti-virus features through a combination of native capabilities and advanced screening technologies from the best-known players in the industry. Both the anti-spam and anti-virus capabilities layer into the Email Mx architecture in a manner that provides maximum abuse protection without impacting system performance.

Extensions

The Openwave Mx 6 extensions technology provides a framework for custom messaging development so operators can extend functionality of their current offerings and differentiate
through new service introductions. This greatly simplifies the integration of technologies and applications and allows operators to benefit from enhancements from best of breed suppliers.

Performance Enhancements and Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Performance Enhancements have resulted in a decrease in CPU utilization by 40% and an increase in capacity by up to 400% in heavy usage broadband environments. This results in a significant improvement in hardware efficiency, lowering the overall hardware usage for a typical configuration by 15% over prior deployments. In addition, Mx 6 offers service providers a choice in database technology which can significantly reduce third party software costs for a combined TCO reduction of 8%.
