Endeavor Releases New Version of Digital Collection Management System - ENcompass 3.6

Improved user interface, expanded metadata harvesting capabilities among major enhancements in new version

DES PLAINES, Ill., Nov. 4 -- Endeavor Information Systems (http://www.endinfosys.com/), the leading provider of library management software, is pleased to announce the general release of version 3.6 of ENCompass, its comprehensive system for managing, searching and linking digital collections.

ENCompass is Endeavor's scalable enterprise-level platform for organizing and accessing content from a wide range of electronic resources, regardless of location or format. It is composed of a suite of modules, each tailored to address a specific need -- including federated searching and building digital collections -- of academic libraries and other research organizations.

This latest release of ENCompass, version 3.6, offers two major system- wide enhancements to deliver a superior experience for the end user. The first is a more intuitive user interface developed in part through usability studies carried out by Endeavor. "ENCompass 3.6 offers a better end-user experience through intensive interface modifications influenced by end user-focused usability testing," said Sara Randall, Endeavor's Director of Strategic Products. "This is a clear demonstration of the value Endeavor as a company places on effective usability testing and, ultimately, user efficiency."

ENCompass 3.6 also delivers redesigned search forms/results and reworked object record displays, features that will enable end users to be more successful in their searching. "The Basic Search box is now tied more closely to the list of searchable resources, making it easier for end users to visually tie the two together," explained Randall. "And in the search results pages, we've taken steps to improve the layout of individual search results and have made similar improvements to the layout on the object record display."

The individual ENCompass modules also include their own specialized enhancements. ENCompass for Digital Collections 3.6 expands on its information retrieval capabilities with support for the Search and Retrieve Web Service (SRW) and the companion Search and Retrieve URL service (SRU). "With SRW and SRU, digital collections in ENCompass are open for searching with this next generation of search and retrieval protocols," Randall said. "SRW/SRU support is a natural extension of the support for XML and web services that ENCompass already provides."

Another ENCompass module, ENCompass for Resource Access 3.6, offers additional support for consortiums to enable federated searching across multiple data types and databases. ERA 3.6 also contains a new relevance ranking capability that, according to Randall, will yield more accurate and relevant search results.

"This release of ENCompass further evidences Endeavor's competency in creating reliable and scalable yet elegantly architected tools for digital asset management," explained Randall. "No matter how sophisticated or varied your electronic resources, ENCompass 3.6 will give you the ability to manage, search, and link across varying collection types and formats and will give your end users more flexible access to these digital assets."
